SHREVEPORT, La. – A top-ten all-time performance was not enough for the Southeast Missouri gymnastics team to capture the Midwest Independent Conference title on Saturday.
The Redhawks erupted with a season-high 195.050 to place third at the conference meet, that score is the 10th-best in program history. Illinois-Chicago won the meet with a 195.600, Illinois State placed second with a 195.425, Texas Woman's took fourth with a 194.775, Lindenwood finished fifth with a 193.050 and host Centenary took sixth with a 192.900.
“Performance wise we did our job,” Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. “We couldn't have asked for anything more, the team put their best out there today. The seniors were on tonight, I'm very proud of what they did. This was a great way for them to end their careers.”
Southeast led off with its strength on uneven bars, where it tallied a 48.825. All six Redhawk gymnasts scored 9.650 or better, led by Taryn Vanderpool's first-place tying 9.850. Megan Fosnow anchored the event with a 9.775 while Margaret O'Neal and Taylor Penzien each notched a 9.750. Taylor Westrick responded with a 9.700 while Kimberly Pickerl posted a strong 9.650, which was dropped from the scoring.
The Redhawks fought through an early fall on beam to score 48.500, their third-best of the season, in the second rotation. Westrick led the way with a 9.825 to tie for fifth and earn second-team All-MIC honors while Vanderpool notched a 9.775. Southeast did not count a score below 9.600, staying in the thick of the team title after two events with a running score of 97.325.
After a bye, Southeast moved on to floor where it tallied a 48.825. Garrett paced the lineup with a 9.850 to earn second-team All-MIC honors as part of a fourth-place tie. Westrick was just behind with a 9.825. Vanderpool and Pickerl also posted strong matching scores of 9.750 to help Southeast keep pace with the field in the team standings.
The Redhawks concluded their evening on vault with a season-best 48.900, their third-highest total in school history. Fosnow erupted with a career-best 9.925, the third-best individual vault in Southeast history, to win the event. Vanderpool also notched a career-best in the event with a 9.825 to tie for fifth. O'Neal scored 9.750 while Pickerl and Garrett also posted matching 9.700 scores to cap the Redhawks' counted scores in their final rotation.
“We trained all year to find Megan's vault landing,” Ewasko said. “Today, she controlled her landing and applied her training.”
Vanderpool tallied a career-best all-around score of 39.200 to finish second in the competition. Penzien also earned conference honors, being voted the MIC Newcomer of the Year.
“Taylor unfortunately had a bout with illness and injury in the middle of the year,” Ewasko said “She turned it into a positive, it made her zone in tighter to her gymnastics. She really fought through the end of the season and she was on for the events she competed. Next year look for her to be back in the all-around.
“For Taryn to step up and do what she did on bars and all-around is a great finish to the season. It also gives her a good starting point entering her senior year.”
The Redhawks' team competitive season concludes with them finishing with a Regional Qualifying Score of 194.130, their highest since the 2009 season. Southeast could still place individual competitors in the NCAA Regional Championships in two weeks. Teams and individuals will be announced next week.
