Series History
Saturday marks the 48th meeting between Southeast and Murray State. The Redhawks have played the Racers more than any Ohio Valley Conference opponent. Murray State owns a 38-8-1 lead in the all-time series which began in 1926. The Racers are 18-5-1 against the Redhawks in Cape Girardeau, winning in two of their previous three visits to Houck Stadium.
Tough Stretch
Southeast faces the Ohio Valley Conference's top three scoring teams in consecutive weeks. The Redhawks recently played at Tennessee State (Oct. 5), which is second in the OVC with 36 points per game. Murray State ranks third with 35.8 points per contest. After this week's matchup against the Racers, Southeast heads to nationally-ranked and OVC-leader Eastern Illinois (Oct. 19). The Panthers lead the league and rank third nationally with 43.6 points per game.
Down to the Wire
The Redhawks met the Racers in the final week of the season each of the last two years. Both of those matchups were decided with a big play on special teams in the final minutes.
Ron Coleman's 8-yard touchdown run tied the game at 35-35 with 3:07 left in the fourth quarter of last year's game at Stewart Stadium. Duane Brady then returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for the decisive score to give the Racers a 42-35 victory. In 2011, quarterback Matt Scheible scored on a 2-yard run with 1:03 remaining in the fourth quarter. However, Tyler Evans blocked
Drew Geldbach's PAT, allowing Murray State to hang on for a 35-34 win at Houck Stadium.
Washington Ties NCAA Record
Running back
Lewis Washington tied an NCAA record 99-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter at Tennessee State (Oct. 5). Washington, who scored his first touchdown of the season, joined one other player in Football Championship Subdivision history whose only rush of the game went for 99 yards (Western Kentucky's Pedro Bacon on Sept. 13, 1986). He also became the second-ever Ohio Valley Conference rusher with a 99-yard run, joining Eastern Kentucky's Bobby Washington (vs. Murray State on Oct. 27, 2007). Washington was the first FCS player to have a 99-yard rush since South Dakota State's Zach Zenner accomplished the feat against Kansas in 2012. In addition, Washington is the 19th player in all of NCAA Division I football to have a 99-yard rush. There were nine Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) and nine Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) players that also ran for 99 yards on one play prior to this season.
Andrews Comes Up Big
Senior cornerback
Cantrell Andrews had one of the bigger games of his career against Tennessee State (Oct. 5). A native of Cape Girardeau, Andrews recorded seven tackles, including six solo stops. He also recovered a fumble and ran 68 yards for a touchdown to give the Redhawks a 9-7 edge with 9:24 left to play in the second quarter. His 68-yard fumble return for a touchdown was the third-longest in school history. Andrews also returned his first career kickoff for 39 yards. He is tied for first in the Ohio Valley Conference with two fumble recoveries.
McCrum Gives Redhawks First Lead
Ryan McCrum's 38-yard field goal in the first quarter gave Southeast its first lead of the season at Tennessee State (Oct. 5). McCrum made the team's first field goal in five games this year.
Opening Drives  Â
Ryan McCrum's first-quarter field goal at Tennessee State (Oct. 5) also marked Southeast's first points on an opening drive in seven-straight games. The last time the Redhawks put up points on their first possession was at Austin Peay on Oct. 27, 2012 (
Levi Terrell 3-yard touchdown run).
Sack Production  Â
The Redhawks turned in two more sacks in their lastest effort at Tennessee State (Oct. 5), and as a result, have eight sacks in five games. Southeast has dropped quarterbacks for a loss of 68 yards. The Redhawks matched their 2012 season total of eight sacks for a loss of 58 yards. Additionally, Southeast hasn't recorded 10 or more sacks in a season since 2010 (14 for a loss of 99 yards).
Offense Looks to Get Going  Â
Southeast is currently eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring offense, averaging only 12.4 points per game. The Redhawks have had just two leads this season and both were in the first half at Tennessee State (Oct. 5). Southeast's season-high point total was 19 vs. Southern Illinois (Sept. 21) during week four of this year. The Redhawks were outscored 169-62 through their first five games this season. Opponents hold a 104-29 advantage in the first half and a 65-33 advantage in the second half against Southeast in 2013.
Redhawks Fall at Tennessee State
Southeast managed to grab its first lead of the season and had an NCAA record 99-yard touchdown run by
Lewis Washington, but suffered a 40-16 setback on the road at Tennessee State on Oct. 5. The Redhawks trailed, 16-9, at halftime and were outscored 17-0 in the decisive third quarter. The loss was Southeast's third-straight in its series against the Tigers.
Longest Play
Lewis Washington's 99-yard touchdown run with 4:38 left in the fourth quarter at Tennessee State (Oct. 5) was the longest play on either a rush, reception, kickoff return or punt return in school history. Here are the previous school record plays in those categories that Washington surpassed:
Rushing Play
Kelvin Anderson, 96 yds (TD) vs. Murray State (Sept. 3, 1992)
Reception
David Stewart, 94 yds (TD) vs. Truman State (Oct. 8, 1983)
Kickoff Return
David Jackson, 97 yds (TD) vs. Abilene Christian (Oct. 12, 1985)
Punt Return
Lyman Brown, 86 yds (TD) vs. Northwest Missouri State (1962)
Southeast has had two plays go for 75 or more yards this season. The other was a 75-yard touchdown pass from
Kyle Snyder to
Paul McRoberts against Southern Illinois (Sept. 21). Snyder hit McRoberts in stride midway through the third quarter of that game. The 75-yard reception tied for the sixth-longest in school history.
The Chase is On
Junior return man
Spencer Davis is 246 yards away from breaking Southeast's all-time career record in kickoff return yardage. Davis currently stands second with 1,693 yards. David Jackson (1983-86) presently holds the record with 1,938 kickoff return yards. Davis already owns two of the school's top-six single-season kickoff return yardage marks.
Fourth Quarter Scores
Southeast has scored twice in the fourth quarter this season, both on rushing plays.
Lewis Washington busted up the middle to score on an NCAA record 99-yard touchdown run with 4:38 left at Tennessee State (Oct. 5). Prior to that,
Ron Coleman's 2-yard touchown run with 6:17 left against UT Martin (Sept. 28) marked the Redhawks first points in the final quarter this season.  Â
Multiple Takeaways  Â
The Redhawks forced multiple turnovers in three of their last four games. Southeast had an interception and fumble recovery against UT Martin (Sept. 28).
Reggie Jennings had his first interception and freshman
John Popovich recovered his first career fumble in that game. Southeast had two interceptions against Southern Illinois (Sept. 21) and an interception and two fumble recoveries at Ole Miss (Sept. 7). The Redhawk defense has forced multiple turnovers in 10 of its last 16 contests.
About Murray State  Â
Murray State has heated up to win four of its last five games and comes to Cape Girardeau on a two-game winning streak. The Racers opened Ohio Valley Conference play with a 35-34 overtime win at Jacksonville State (Sept. 28). Last week, Murray State beat Tennessee Tech, 35-24, at Stewart Stadium. The Racers rank third in the OVC in scoring offense (35.8 ppg) and fourth in total offense (404.3 ypg). Murray State is led by 2013 Walter Payton Award candidate Walter Powell. Powell was rated the top punt returner and No. 4 wide receiver in the FCS by Phil Steele. He currently leads the OVC in scoring (12.0 ppg) and all-purpose yards (150.5 ypg). Murray State quarterback Maikhail Miller, a transfer from Ole Miss, is second in the league in total offense (255.2 ypg) and third in passing average (201 ypg). His 12 touchdown passes are second in the OVC, as well.
Kargbo Leads Redhawk Defense  Â
Free safety
Ben Kargbo leads Southeast and stands fifth in the Ohio Valley Conference with 41 tackles this season. Kargbo had nine tackles in each of his four starts in 2013. His 27 solo stops are fourth-best in the league.
Redhawks Look to Regroup  Â
Southeast is winless through its first five games of a season for the first time since 2005. The Redhawks lost, 45-7, at Southeastern Louisiana (Aug. 29), 31-13, at SEC power Ole Miss (Sept. 7), 36-19, vs. Southern Illinois (Sept. 21), 17-7, against No. 23 UT Martin (Sept. 28) and, 40-16, at Tennessee State (Oct. 5). Southeast looks to end an eight-game losing streak dating back to Nov. 3, 2012. The Redhawks have also lost five-consecutive Ohio Valley Conference games going back to that same date.
