Redhawks Remain Home to Host Urbana
Southeast Missouri (1-7) continues its three-game homestand when it hosts Urbana University (6-2) Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., CT, at Missouri National Guard Field/Houck Stadium.
Series History
Southeast meets Urbana University for the first time in 2013. Urbana, an NCAA Division II institution from Ohio, will travel over 400 miles to face the Redhawks this week.
Against Non-Division I
The Redhawks step outside of Ohio Valley Conference play to host Urbana University in their final non-league matchup of the season. Southeast is a perfect 7-0 all-time against non-Division I opponents under head coach Tony Samuel. Samuel's teams beat Missouri S&T in 2006, Southwest Baptist in both 2007, 2008 and 2010, Quincy in 2009, Central Methodist in 2011 and Mars Hill College in 2012. The Redhawks scored 30 or more points in all of those games against non-Division I competition.
Davis Breaks Record
Junior return specialist
Spencer Davis broke Southeast's all-time career record in kick return yards when he ran back five kicks for 98 yards against Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 26). A native of Florissant, Mo., Davis officially broke the record with an 18-yard return on the opening kickoff. He currently has 2,033 yards, surpassing David Jackson (1,938 yards from 1983-86). Davis already owns two of the school's top-six single-season kickoff return yardage marks. He ranks second in the Ohio Valley Conference in kick return average (22.6 ypr) and sixth in all-purpose yardage (112.8 ypg).
McRoberts Grabs Another
Sophomore
Paul McRoberts scored Southeast's only touchdown against Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 26). McRoberts hauled in a 23-yard pass from Lathrop late in the third quarter. He finished with a game-high five catches for 69 yards.McRoberts leads the Redhawks with 32 receptions for 494 yards and six touchdowns this season. He has scored a TD in three-straight games.
Tough Schedule
Southeast, which is seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, is through the toughest part of its league slate. The Redhawks faced Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 26), Eastern Illinois (Oct. 19), Murray State (Oct. 12), Tennessee State (Oct. 5) and UT Martin (Sept. 28) in their first five OVC contests. Combined, those teams are 29-12 overall and 17-5 in the conference this season. After this week, Southeast closes out its 2013 campaign with a home game vs. Tennessee Tech (Nov. 9) and road matchups at Austin Peay (Nov. 16) and Jacksonville State (Nov. 23). TTU, APSU and JSU are a combined 2-11 in OVC play.
Jackson Nearly Does It Again
DeMichael Jackson narrowly missed rushing for 100 yards in his second-straight game. Jackson carried the ball 23 times for 98 yards against Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 26). Prior to that, he rushed for 126 yards and scored his first career touchdown on a 27-yard run with 6:01 left to play in the second quarter against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 19). Jackson and fellow running back
Lewis Washington (101 yards at Tennessee State) have the only 100-yard rushing performances this season.
Redhawks Lose on Homecoming
Eastern Kentucky scored the first 24 points of the game en route to a 31-7 victory over Southeast on Oct. 26. The Redhawks fell to 11-12 all-time in Homecoming games since moving to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. Southeast also dropped to 3-21 all-time against EKU.
More Defense
The Redhawk defense limited Eastern Kentucky to only seven points in the second half. As a result, it marked the fourth time this season where Southeast has held an opponent to seven points or less in a single half. The Redhawks also gave up 333 total yards, their fewest allowed in a game this year.
Lathrop Embraces Quarterback Spot
Scott Lathrop, who has started each of the last three games at quarterback, completed 16-of-22 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown during his latest effort against Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 26). Lathrop is 50-of-76 passing for 514 yards and seven touchdowns over that three-game stretch. He has also gone two-straight games without throwing an interception. Â
