Southeast Heads to Jacksonville State
Southeast Missouri (2-2, 1-0) will play its first day game of the season when it heads to Jacksonville State (1-2, 0-1) Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m., CT, at Burgess-Snow Field.
Series History
Southeast holds a 5-11 record all-time against Jacksonville State. The Redhawks are 1-8 against the Gamecocks since moving to the NCAA Division I ranks. Southeast has dropped nine of the last 10 meetings between these teams. The Redhawks last beat the Gamecocks in Cape Girardeau during the 2007 campaign. That year, Southeast won, 32-25, and snapped a seven-game losing streak in its regular-season finale on Nov. 17.
Close Call
The last two meetings between Southeast and Jacksonville State have come down to the wire and been decided by three or less points. Calvin Middleton ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns, and scored the go-ahead TD late in the third quarter to help the Gamecocks eke out a 22-21 come-from-behind win at Houck Stadium last season. Prior to that, Southeast led, 27-22, with 4:06 left to play in the game. Marques Ivory then threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Alan Bonner with 11 seconds on the clock to help JSU escape with a 29-27 victory in the Ohio Valley Conference title game at Burgess-Snow Field on Nov. 13, 2010.
Peiffer Approaching 300 Career Tackles
Senior LB
Blake Peiffer needs just 10 more tackles to get 300 in his career. Peiffer currently ranks tied for eighth all-time with 290 career tackles at Southeast. Peiffer is on pace to become the seventh Redhawk to register 300 or more career tackles.
What a Game!
Southeast opened its Ohio Valley Conference season with a thrilling 41-38 double overtime victory over Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22) at Houck Stadium. It marked the sixth time the Redhawks played an overtime game since joining the NCAA Division I ranks. Southeast improved to 5-1 all-time in such games.
Geldbach Named OVC Co-Specialist of the Week
Drew Geldbach was named the Ohio Valley Conference Co-Specialist of the Week on Sept. 23. Geldbach scored 11 points and kicked both the game-tying and game-winning field goals to help lift Southeast to its first OVC win of the season against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22). Geldbach's 39-yard field goal tied the game at 31-31 with 3:58 left in the fourth quarter. That score would remain the same until the end of regulation. He then kicked a 34-yard field goal to win the game during the second possession of overtime. In addition, Geldbach was a perfect 5-of-5 on PATs against the Golden Eagles.
Defense Scores
For the first time since joining the NCAA Division I ranks, Southeast returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game.
Darrick Borum intercepted a Tre Lamb pass and dashed 41 yards down the far sideline to the end zone with 9:36 left in the second quarter vs. Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22). On the Golden Eagles next possession,
Branden Spann picked off a Lamb pass at the goal line and sprinted 100 yards for a touchdown with 2:42 left to play. Spann's 100-yard interception return for a TD tied a school record. Southeast scored two defensive touchdowns in a game for the first time since Sept. 16, 2000 (vs. Illinois State).
Elite Company
Southeast senior safety
Branden Spann's 100-yard interception return for a touchdown tied an Ohio Valley Conference record. Spann is the fourth player in league history to accomplish the feat. Ray Oldham of Middle Tennessee (1970), George Floyd of Eastern Kentucky (1980) and Eddie Calvin of Southeast Missouri (2007) are the others. Spann is one of 39 players in NCAA Football Championship Subdivision history to return an interception 100 yards for a score.
Redhawks Soar
The Redhawks racked up 141 interception return yards against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22), their most in a game since moving to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Southeast's previous Division I record was 116 interception return yards vs. Southwest Baptist on Sept. 8, 2007.
Nevarez Comes Up Big
DE
Alonzo Nevarez established career-highs in tackles (6) and sacks (1.5) against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22). Nevarez also helped drop Stephen Bush for a loss of one yard on a 3rd-and-1 during TTU's second overtime possession. That huge defensive stop resulted in a missed field goal which ended the game.
Mr. Playmaker
Junior wide receiver
D.J. Foster has caught a touchdown pass in three of his first four games this season. Foster made two big touchdown catches to help key Southeast's win over Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22). He caught a 29-yard pass to give the Redhawks a quick 7-0 lead with 12:54 left in the first quarter. Foster's other TD catch came on a 25-yard pass in the first overtime period. He bobbled the ball before securing it in just enough time to stay in-bounds in the back of the end zone on that play. Foster matched a career-high seven catches and finished with 101 receiving yards against the Golden Eagles. It marked the second time in his career where he has had 100 or more receiving yards in a game. Ironically, both of those efforts came against Tennessee Tech. Foster was the only Redhawk receiver who caught a pass against the Golden Eagles.
Opening Statement
D.J. Foster's 29-yard touchdown pass from
Scott Lathrop marked Southeast's first touchdown on an opening drive this season. The Redhawks marched 87 yards in three plays to take an early 7-0 lead against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22) with 12:54 left in the first quarter.
Hard-Nosed Terrell
Team captain and senior running back
Levi Terrell grinded out the fourth 100-yard rushing game of his career when he had a career-high 171 yards on 25 carries against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22). Terrell also broke free for a career-long 48-yard rush in the first quarter to set up Southeast's first touchdown. This is the second-straight season where Terrell has finished with over 100 rushing yards against the Golden Eagles.
Peiffer Sees Doubles
Senior linebacker
Blake Peiffer has registered double-digit tackles in each of his last two starts. Peiffer recorded an Ohio Valley Conference single-game high 18 tackles at Southern Illinois (Sept. 15). A week later, he turned in a game-high 15 tackles against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22). Peiffer currently leads the OVC with 48 tackles (12.0 per game) this season. He has finished with 10 or more tackles in a game on 13 occasions in his career.
Keep it Going
Southeast's defense intercepted three passes against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22), giving the unit multiple takeaways for the fourth time this season. The Redhawks have forced at least two turnovers in six-consecutive games dating back to 2011. Southeast leads the Ohio Valley Conference and the nation with 16 takeaways in four games this season. The Redhawks also tie for first in the league in turnover margin (+7). Southeast has already surpassed its total number of takeaways (14) it had last year.
Pick Me Up
Six different players have had at least one interception for Southeast this season.
Tylor Brock is tied for first in the Ohio Valley Conference and fourth in the nation with three picks, while
Branden Spann and
Darrick Borum follow with two apiece. The Redhawks top the league and the nation with 10 interceptions this year. Southeast ran back two of its picks for touchdowns, both of which came against Tennessee Tech (Sept. 22).
