Southeast Heads to Southern Illinois
Southeast Missouri (1-1) crosses the Mississippi River to face regional-rival Southern Illinois (0-2) Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., CT, at Saluki Stadium.
We Meet Again
Southeast and Southern Illinois meet for the 78th time in 2012. The Redhawks hold a 37-32-8 advantage in the overall series which dates all the way back to 1913. Southeast is 19-15-4 all-time in Carbondale and has won during three of its last four trips to SIU.
Do You Remember?
Southeast scored 14 fourth-quarter points to overcome an 11-point deficit and stun then-No. 5 SIU, 24-21, the last time it visited Saluki Stadium on Sept. 18, 2010. That win started a nine-game winning streak for the Redhawks who went on to clinch their first-ever Ohio Valley Conference title and NCAA Playoff berth. OVC Offensive Player of the Year Henry Harris rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns, and scored the decisive TD on a 67-yard run with 3:41 left to play in the game. That win marked the Redhawks first over a top-five opponent since joining the NCAA Division I ranks.
Let's Get Another
The Redhawks have not posted back-to-back wins over Southern Illinois in Carbondale since 2000 (W, 34-33) and 2002 (W, 21-14). Southeast will try for that feat this year after upending SIU in 2010.
Samuel vs. Southern Illinois
Southeast head coach Tony Samuel is 1-2 all-time against Southern Illinois. Samuel's teams have faced SIU in Cape Girardeau during the 2009 (L, 24-42) and 2011 (L, 10-38) campaigns, and in Carbondale during the 2010 (W, 24-21) season. This year will mark the first time where Samuel faces a non-ranked Saluki team. SIU was ranked No. 1 in 2009, No. 5 in 2010 and No. 17 in 2011 at the time it played Southeast.
Worth Noting
With a win Saturday, Tony Samuel will become just the second Southeast head coach to beat Southern Illinois twice on the road during the Redhawks NCAA Division I era. Tim Billings is currently the only Southeast head coach with two road victories against the Salukis (2000, 2002).
Redhawks Get First Win of the Season
Southeast picked up its first win of the season with a 30-18 victory over NCAA Division II Mars Hill College on Sept. 8. The Redhawks improved to 6-1 all-time in home-openers and 7-0 against non-Division I foes under head coach Tony Samuel.
Brock Keys Defense
Senior FS
Tylor Brock had six tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble against Mars Hill College (Sept. 8). Brock, who currently ranks tied for second in the nation in interceptions, leads the team with 16 tackles. Prior to Saturday, Brock had gone 14-straight games without a pick. Southeast finished with five interceptions vs. the Lions, marking the first time since 1997 (vs. Eastern Illinois) where it had five picks in a game. Brock presently ranks tied for 11th all-time with eight career interceptions at Southeast.
Picks a Plenty
Southeast has six interceptions in two games this year, and as a result, already surpassed its season total of four in 2011. The Redhawks lead the Ohio Valley Conference in interceptions (6) and turnover margin (+2.5). Southeast also ranks second in the nation in turnovers gained (9) and fourth in turnover margin.
