CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri released its 2012-13 men's basketball schedule Tuesday. The Redhawks will play 14 games at the Show Me Center this season.
"Our schedule has a good balance of home and away games," said Southeast head coach
Dickey Nutt. "It's exciting for our team to get the opportunity to play very good teams. Our non-conference schedule will ultimately prepare us for conference play."
In addition to its 14 regular-season home dates, Southeast will play host to Ouachita Baptist (Oct. 30) and Truman State (Nov. 5) in exhibition action.
The Redhawks non-conference slate features matchups with national runners-up Kansas and Missouri, which won its conference tournament during its final year with the Big 12.
Southeast tips off the season against Kansas (Nov. 9) at Allen Fieldhouse, labeled by many as one of the best places in America to watch a college basketball game.
The Jayhawks, who fell to Kentucky, 67-59, in last year's national championship game, finished the 2011-12 season at 32-7 overall with a perfect 16-0 record at home. Kansas won the Big 12 Conference regular-season title with a 16-2 mark. The Jayhawks also own a 22-game winning streak on their homecourt.
Southeast faces Kansas in the first of four games as part of the CBE Classic. The Redhawks will also play Chattanooga (Nov. 18), Louisiana Tech (Nov. 19) and Troy (Nov. 20) in Chattanooga, Tenn., during that tournament.
The Redhawks host NAIA member Lyon College (Nov. 12) in their home-opener before entertaining McNeese State (Nov. 15) three days later. The Cowboys head to Cape Girardeau for the first time on a return trip from last year's ESPN Sears BracketBuster event.
A home-and-home series with New Orleans (away on Nov. 29; home on Dec. 19), road trips to Illinois-Chicago (Nov. 24), Southeastern Louisiana (Dec. 1), Missouri (Dec. 4) and UMKC (Dec. 22), and home contests against Hannibal-LaGrange (Nov. 26), Central Arkansas (Dec. 8) and a to be determined Sears BracketBuster (Feb. 23) opponent complete Southeast's non-league schedule.
Southeast, which opened its season with an 83-68 loss against Missouri in 2011-12, will get a re-match with the Tigers in early December. Missouri fashioned an overall record of 30-5, but was upended by Norfolk State, 86-84, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The addition of Belmont gives the Ohio Valley Conference 12 member institutions, and as a result, the league is the largest it has been since it was formed in 1948.
Beginning in 2012-13, Southeast's 16-game conference schedule will include divisional play. The Redhawks, who are in the West Division, play Austin Peay (home on Jan. 3, away on Feb. 28), Eastern Illinois (away on Jan. 26, home on Feb. 9) , Murray State (home on Jan. 5, away on Mar. 2), SIU Edwardsville (away on Jan. 24, home on Feb. 7) and UT Martin (home on Dec. 29, away on Feb. 16) twice this season.
Murray State is coming off a historic 31-2 season which saw the Racers go undefeated through their first 23 games in 2011-12.
The remainder of the OVC schedule includes away games against Belmont (Jan. 10), Tennessee State (Jan. 12) and Jacksonville State (Feb. 20), along with home tilts vs. Morehead State (Jan. 17), Tennessee Tech (Jan. 19) and Eastern Kentucky (Feb. 2). Southeast opens OVC play at home against UT Martin on Dec. 29.
Additionally, the Redhawks game against Eastern Illinois (Feb. 9) is designated as this year's Hall of Fame contest.
The 2013 OVC Basketball Tournament will be held at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium on Mar. 6-9. All eight men's and all eight women's teams that qualify for the tournament field will gather at this single site for the entire tournament.
In 2011, the bracket shifted from a traditional 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc. format to a merit-based format that rewards the top teams during the regular season with byes into the quarterfinals and semifinals. Now the first round of each the men's and women's tournament will feature the No. 5 seed against the No. 8 seed and the No. 6 seed against the No. 7 seed. The winners of those games will advance to the quarterfinals to face the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds (who received a bye). The winners of those quarterfinal matchups will advance to the semifinals to face the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds (who received a pair of byes).
The combined men's and women's championship has been held at Municipal Auditorium seven previous times: 1994, 1995, 1996, 2004, 2008, 2011 and 2012. The men also held its championship at the venue in 1989.
