OVC Outdoor Championships Come to Southeast this Weekend

Southeast hosts the outdoor conference meet for the first time since 2008 this weekend.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – With the calendar flipped to May, the stage is now set at the Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex as the Southeast Missouri track and field program hosts the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships this weekend.
The meet, which runs on Friday and Saturday, is a scored competition that pits the Redhawks against the other eight sponsoring OVC schools.
The men's meet features five schools (Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Southeast and Tennessee State). Points are awarded to the top-six event finishers (10 points for first place, eight for second, six for third, four for fourth, two for fifth and one for sixth).
In addition to those five schools, Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Murray State and Tennessee Tech will be in the meet on the women's side. Points are awarded to the top-eight finishers in each event (10 points for first place, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth).
This weekend marks the first time since 2008 that Southeast has played host to the conference championship meet. That year, the Redhawks won the men's meet to cap legendary head coach Joey Haines' career.
This year's Redhawks will try to do the same thing and both the men's and women's programs figure to be in the thick of the championship hunt if the OVC performance list is any indication. Southeast has 28 athletes or relay teams ranked in the top three of the OVC.
On the women's end Jessica Bollinger leads both the women's 5000m and 10,000m with season-bests of 17:19.80 and 36:57.20, Cara Harbstreet paces all OVC women in the high jump at 5-6 and Courtney Gapelu tops all OVC women in the shot put (46-7 1/2).
The men have Jacob Kent leading the OVC in the high jump at 6-10 1/4 and Kevin Farley topping all competitors in the shot put with his career-best throw of 58-2.
Eastern Illinois claimed both the men's and women's titles at the OVC Indoor Championships in February. The Redhawks' men finished second and the women placed fifth. EIU also swept both titles in last year's OVC Outdoor Championship, with Southeast finishing second in both meets.
Southeast has won a combined 13 outdoor OVC titles. The women's team has won the meet eight times (1995, '97, '98, 2000, '03, '04, '05 and '06), trailing only Eastern Kentucky's 11 titles. The Redhawk men have claimed the team title on five occasions (1995, '96, 2005, '06 and '08), only Eastern Illinois (12 titles) has won more among current OVC schools.
Friday's meet begins at noon with the men's pole vault and women's discus. The men's 3000m steeplechase is the first running event of the day and is scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m. The final scheduled event of day one is the women's 10,000m run, which is scheduled to run at 7 p.m.
The competition resumes on Saturday with the men's hammer throw at 10 a.m. The men's 4x100m relay starts the day on the track at 1 p.m. and the final event of the meet is the women's 4x400m relay and that runs at 4:15 p.m.
