CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –
Levi Terrell ran for 136 yards and Southeast Missouri (2-5, 1-3) turned the ball over four times in a 27-17 loss to UT Martin (6-2, 4-1) Saturday afternoon at Missouri National Guard Field/Houck Stadium.
Terrell ran for over 100 yards for the fourth-straight game and has finished with over 100 rushing yards in all four Ohio Valley Conference games this season.
“Levi is a great second-effort runner and he just keeps coming at you,” said Southeast head coach Tony Samuel. “We had a lot of missed opportunities today and that is a little out of character for us. I was proud of our effort though.”
Back-to-back fourth-quarter turnovers inside the red zone proved costly for Southeast down the stretch.
The Redhawks had a 1
st-and-10 at the UTM-14 when
Scott Lathrop fumbled the ball and DJ Roberts recovered for the Skyhawks.
Southeast was on the move again, but this time, Thad Williams intercepted Lathrop's pass on a 2
nd-and-1 at the UTM-8.
After that, the Redhawks never recovered.
Jason McNair returned the game's first punt 56 yards to the Southeast-7 yardline. Two plays later, Derek Carr scored on a 1-yard run to give UTM a quick 7-0 lead with 12:50 left to play in the first quarter.
Southeast faced a 3
rd-and-14 later in the quarter when
Scott Lathrop completed an 18-yard pass to
Renard Celestin, giving the Redhawks a first down at the UTM-28.
Spencer Davis, after picking up six yards, then hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Lathrop to tie the game at 7-7 with 3:40 remaining.
Davis had gone seven-straight games without a touchdown reception and made his first TD catch since Nov. 5, 2011 (vs. Central Methodist).
Tylor Brock intercepted Carr's fourth-down pass in Southeast's own end zone and ran 47 yards. The Redhawks managed to get to the Skyhawks 15-yardline before settling for a 32-yard field goal by
Drew Geldbach to take a 10-7 edge at the 3:50 mark.
The Skyhawks regrouped to score the final 10 points of the half and take a 17-10 lead at intermission.
Carr completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Sims with at the 3:28 mark of the second quarter.
After Marquis Clemons recovered
DeMichael Jackson's fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Cody Sandlin kicked a 32 yard field goal with one second on the clock.
Southeast outgained UTM, 149-33, on the ground in the first half. Terrell (66) and Lathrop (33) combined for 99 of those yards on 13 carries each.
UTM added to its lead early in the second half when it drove 53 yards in 10 plays. Sandlin capped the march with a 35-yard field goal to give the Skyhawks a 20-10 advantage at the 11:24 mark of the third quarter.
Southeast answered with its longest scoring drive of the day. The Redhawks covered 86 yards in 15 plays and diced UTM's lead to 20-17 when Lathrop scored on a 1-yard run with 4:19 left.
However, the Skyhawks used a 39-yard run by Barksdale to move inside Southeast's 35-yardline on the second play of their next possession.
McNair picked up the last 21 yards of that drive and scored on a 3-yard run to grab a 27-17 lead for UTM with 1:25 remaining.
Terrell averaged 6.2 yards per carry en route to his game-high 136 yards. He ran the ball 22 times.
Lathrop followed with 61 yards and one touchdown on 24 attempts, and 12-of-19 passes for 153 yards and another TD.

Barksdale led UTM with 107 yards on 11 carries, averaging just under 10 yards (9.7) per rush.
Carr threw for 156 yards and a touchdown on 22-of-28 passes.
Defensively,
Blake Peiffer led Southeast with 12 tackles, including two for loss. Southeast recorded six tackles for loss, a week after not dropping a single ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage against Tennessee State.
