CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri specialists are game-changers and they live to make the big play.
Chris Norris is the mastermind behind Southeast's special teams units, while former Redhawks starting cornerback
Salim Powell assists Norris.
Southeast returns its starting kicker, punter and long snapper this season.
Junior
Drew Geldbach (Wildwood, Mo.) is back as the Redhawks place kicker. Geldbach handled the kickoff and place kicking duties in 2010. He placed himself among Southeast's all-time single-season leaders in field goals and PATs. Gelbach hit 12-of-17 field goals and converted 33 of his 38 point after attempts. He ranked second on the team in scoring and made five field goals of 40 or more yards, including a 53-yarder on the first attempt of his career.
Redshirt-sophomore
Joe Vucic (Willoughby Hills, Ohio) started all 12 games at punter last season. He punted 46 times for 1,709 yards, averaging 37 yards per punt. Vucic pinned opponents inside their own 20-yardline on 10 occasions and had three of his punts sail for 50 or more yards.
Junior
Brandon Gabbard (Peoria, Ariz.) enters his third year as the Redhawks starting long snapper. Gabbard has started 23-consecutive games.
Australia native Eddie Kocwa (Brisbane, Australia) brings some international flavor to Southeast's kicking game.
David Smart (Rogers, Ark.) and
Derek Gohn (St. Louis, Mo.) add depth at long snapper, while
Matt Scheible (Washington, Mo.) and
Aaron King (Union City, Mo.) are set to handle the holding duties.
Redshirt-freshman
Spencer Davis (Florissant, Mo.) is expected to be the Redhawks top return man. Davis, who missed his rookie season with a knee injury, scored eight touchdowns on punt returns during his prep career at Hazelwood Central.
Kris Cottner (Perryville, Mo.) and
Lennies McFerren (Paris, Tenn.) are other return threats.
Cottner returned seven kickoffs for 137 yards, averaging just under 20 yards per return last season.
The Southeast football team did not practice Thursday. Instead, the team was busy helping other students move into their respective housing locations. Southeast officially begins classes on Aug. 22.
The Redhawks 2011 preseason camp will officially end with one final intrasquad scrimmage Saturday. The scrimmage is set for 1-3 p.m. at Houck Stadium.
