Softball Hosts Rival SIUC in 2011 Home Opener

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The Southeast Missouri State softball team hosts non-conference rival Southern Illinois University at Carbondale on Wednesday, March 8 in their 2011 home opener at the Southeast Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.

The Redhawks look to extend their winning streak in home openers. Dating back to their 2006 opener, the Redhawks have won four-straight.

REDHAWK REWIND
The Redhawks (3-10) went 0-3 over the weekend at the SLU Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament in St. Louis, Mo. On Friday, they fell 5-0 to 17th-ranked Missouri before allowing three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lose to Missouri State, 3-2. On Saturday, they concluded play with a 8-3 loss to host Saint Louis.

SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
The Redhawks have dropped four-straight games heading into their Wednesday match-up against the regional rival Salukis.

Senior Carmen Fowler leads the team in batting with a .400 average. She also leads the team with three doubles, 12 RBI, a .525 slugging percentage and .468 on base percentage.

Lead-off hitter Cheyenne Gipson is second on the club with a .302 average. She leads the team with eight runs scored and is a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts.

Newcomer Taylor Cowan leads the team with two home runs and ranks second with eight RBI and a .444 slugging percentage.

In the circle, freshman Alora Marble is 1-3 in eight appearances with a team-best 3.58 earned run average. She leads the team in innings (29.1) and strikeouts (14).

Cowan is also 1-3 with a 4.31 ERA in eight appearances.

SCOUTING THE SALUKIS
The Salukis (11-5) have played in four straight tournaments to start off the 2011 season and are coming off a 1-2 weekend after hosting the Coach B Classic with a win over Wright State and losses to No. 24 Kentucky and Purdue.

Five Salukis are batting over .300 led by Taylor Orsburn's .366 average. She has collected three home runs and 14 RBI this season.

Morgan Barchan is batting .350 followed by Cristina Trapani (.326) and Mallory Duran (.306).

Jayna Spivey leads the team with five home runs and 15 RBI.

Danielle Glosson is the club's ace, compiling a 6-3 record and a 3.63 ERA in 14 appearances. She has seven complete games in nine starts. She also leads the team with 58 strikeouts in 67 innings.

THE SERIES
The Salukis have won 14-straight against the Redhawks in the yearly match-up of non-conference regional rivals separated by the Mississippi River. They lead the all-time series 75-28-1.

The two teams have had their annual match-up cancelled last season due to inclement weather.

In their last match-up during the 2009 season the Redhawks dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Salukis at Charlotte West Stadium.
