DAYTON, Ohio – An 11-0 run gave the Southeast Missouri State women's basketball team its best start of the season, but the offense went cold in the second half and led to a 74-53 loss to host Wright State at the Wright State Holiday Invitational on Monday.
The Redhawks (2-10) made only 6-of-28 second-half shots (21.4 percent) to drop its third consecutive contest.
After Wright State opened the scoring with a Kim Demmings jumper, Southeast reeled off 11-straight points, its longest unanswered scoring run of the season. Bailie Roberts and Courtney Shiffer each scored four points and Karley Evans drilled a three-pointer in the Redhawks' surge.
"I was really pleased with the effort the team showed today," Southeast head coach Ty Margenthaler said. "This was a real gut check after yesterday's loss and I felt the team responded well. We came out with great energy and played hard. Wright State is a solid team that's big and athletic. I think that wore us down a little at the end."
An 18-2 Raiders' run made it 20-13 in favor of Wright State with just over 11 and a half minutes remaining in the first half. WSU's Molly Fox contributed eight of those points during the stretch.
That seven-point hole was Southeast's largest in the opening stanza. The Redhawks clawed to within three twice and ended the half trailing 34-30.
The Raiders outscored the Redhawks, 19-6, in the first eight minutes of the second half to turn a four-point lead into a 53-36 advantage. Wright State opened up a 19-point bulge with 7:46 remaining on a three-point play by Fox, who scored 13 of WSU's first 26-second half points. Fox finished with a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds. Wright State's lead got as large as 22 points with under a minute left.
WSU shot 46.4 percent from the field and held Southeast to 31.6 percent shooting in the game. The Raiders also connected on 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) three-pointers while the Redhawks countered with a 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) mark. Wright State also made 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) free throws compared to Southeast's 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) line from the charity stripe. WSU also held a slight advantage in rebounding, 39-36, and committed one less turnover (14) than Southeast (15). The Raiders dished out 21 assists on their 26 field goals while the Redhawks assisted on 13 of their 18 makes.
Roberts led Southeast with 11 points and Patricia Mack pulled down a team-high eight rebounds in only 16 minutes. Bianca Beck tied a game-high with five assists and did not commit a single turnover.
The Redhawks conclude their tournament run against Longwood on Tuesday. Opening tipoff is at 1:30 p.m. CT.
