DAYTON, Ohio – Brittany Harriel scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds to lift the Southeast Missouri State women's basketball team to a 56-52 win over Longwood in the final game of the Wright State Holiday Invitational on Tuesday.
Harriel made 8-of-9 free throws, all in the second half, and scored nine of the Redhawks' (3-10) last 10 points to secure the victory. Tuesday's performance is the junior forward's third career double-double.
“I knew Longwood would come out hard today,” Southeast head coach Ty Margenthaler said. “I knew it would come down to a toughness factor. We did a nice job of recognizing mismatches down the stretch. We got Bailie (Roberts) and Brittany in the block and Brittany got to the line. This is a great early Christmas gift.”
After leading by two at the break, Harriel gave the Redhawks a 41-33 on a three-point play with 14:25 left in the contest.
Longwood's Erin Neal started a 9-1 run when she drilled a three-pointer with just over 11 minutes remaining to bring the Lancers within five. A minute later, Chelsea Coward split a pair of free throws. Following an Allyson Bradshaw free throw, Brittini Billups and Erin Neal each scored baskets to make it a 42-41 game with 7:44 remaining.
Roberts hit two free throws to up the lead back to three, but LU scored on consecutive possessions to take its first lead of the second half, 45-44. Karley Evans followed with two free throws to put Southeast back ahead, but an Erin Neal jumper at the end of the shot clock put the Lancers back in front.
Brittany Harriel scored on the next two possessions, hitting two free throws and after a Bianca Beck steal, the junior converted a layup to make it 50-47 with just over five minutes remaining and Southeast never trailed again.
The Lancers still fought tough as Chelsea Coward hit two free throws to cut the Redhawks' lead to one with 4:42 left. Beck split a pair of free throws to make it 51-49 and Harriel drilled two more from the charity stripe to make it a two-possession game with 2:50 left.
A Brittani Billups baseline jumper cut Southeast's lead in half at 53-51 on the next possession and Erin Neal split two free throws to make it a one point game with 1:09 remaining.
Longwood grabbed the Neal miss at the line, but Southeast's defense forced a five-second violation on the inbound to get the ball back. The Redhawks came up empty on the next possession, but got another stop defensively. Harriel split a pair of free throws to give Southeast a two point lead with less than 30 seconds left.
The Redhawks got another stop defensively and Harriel again went to the line, where she calmly drained two more free throws to secure the victory.
Southeast opened up a 7-2 lead in under three minutes and was up 9-4 at the 16:41 mark. Roberts opened the scoring with a three-point play, Evans was set up for two back door layups and Courtney Shiffer hit a long two-point jumper to cap the early run.
Following a timeout, LU's Neal made consecutive baskets to bring the Lancers within one at 9-8. Longwood took its first lead, 10-9, on a Billups jumper.
Undeterred, the Redhawks scored the next seven points and embarked on a 17-4 scoring run to grab a 26-14 lead with 7:05 remaining in the opening stanza. Shiffer put the Redhawks back ahead with two free throws and five different Redhawks scored in the surge. Beck contributed a layup while Bradshaw, Evans and Shelah Fields each connected on a three-pointer. Brittany Harriel drilled a jumper and Evans capped the run with a jumper of her own.
The score was still 27-16 in favor of the Redhawks with 5:52 left in the first half, but LU's Crystal Smith caught fire from long range. Hitting three trifectas, the last of which cut Southeast's lead to 30-28 as the Lancers finished the half on a 14-4 run.
Evans joined Harriel in double figures with 11 points, nine of which came in the first half to give the Redhawks the early lead. The game featured three ties and six lead changes.
Longwood shot 35.6 percent from the floor while Southeast hit 29.6 percent of its shots (5-of-24 in the second half). The Lancers held a slim 41-40 advantage in rebounds, although the Redhawks controlled the glass (24-16) in the second half.
Southeast won the game from the charity stripe, making 21-of-26 (80.8 percent) of its attempts while Longwood made only 6-of-10 (60 percent). The Redhawks forced 19 Lancer turnovers while committing 16 miscues themselves.
The Redhawks are off for the holidays and open up Ohio Valley Conference play against Morehead State on Dec. 28.
