CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Nine different players scored points to lead Southeast Missouri (3-6) to a 55-44 victory over Central Methodist (5-4) Saturday afternoon in a shootout at Houck Stadium.
The 99 combined points marked the most scored in regulation play during Southeast's NCAA Division I football era.
“I don't know if I've ever been a part of a game like that,” said Southeast quarterback
Matt Scheible. “Our offense just did a good job of responding and our kicking game stepped up.”
Scheible, one of seven Redhawks who scored touchdowns, threw for a career-high 243 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 112 yards and another TD to lead Southeast to a hard fought win against a scrappy CMU bunch.
“We won the game with our offense and kicking game,” added Southeast head coach Tony Samuel. “I was concerned with their offense because we only had a week to prepare for their triple option style attack.”
The Eagles gave Southeast's defense all it could handle with their wicked multiple formation approach.
Both teams traded punches in a dogfight that resulted in the Redhawks delivering the final blow at the end.
Scheible threw touchdown passes on back-to-back drives to give Southeast a quick 14-0 lead early in the first quarter.
Scheible tossed a 34-yard pass to
Chantae Ahamefule, who caught the ball in the back right corner of the end zone along the far sideline. That play came on a 4
th-and-8, capping a nice 8-play, 70-yard drive with 11:30 left to play.
Steve Hendry recovered Bryant Jackson's fumble at CMU's 47-yardline to set up Southeast's next score.
Four plays later, Scheible hooked up with
Aaron King who got by an Eagle defender to make his first career touchdown reception on a 32-yard pass. King's touchdown pushed Southeast's lead to 14-0 with 7:31 remaining.
CMU cut Southeast's lead in half when Caleb Haynes hit paydirt on a 2-yard run at the 1:24 mark.
After
Joe Vucic's first career field goal split the uprights from 34 yards out extended the Redhawks lead to 17-7 with 7:18 left to play in the second quarter, the Eagles struck again.
Haynes' second rushing touchdown, this time consisting of five yards, pulled CMU to within three points (17-14) at the 4:04 mark.
Southeast would get big score just before the half when Scheible broke free for a 19-yard run to polish off a 15-play, 80-yard march with four seconds on the clock. Scheible's touchdown gave Southeast a 24-14 advantage at the half.
Neither defense had a stop in the second half which saw the Redhawks and Eagles light up the scoreboard for a combined 61 points.
Everytime CMU threatened, Southeast answered. The Redhawks also withstood a 21-point fourth quarter by the Eagles.
Burton Iosefa dashed 61 yards for a touchdown on the second play of CMU's opening drive of the second half.
Lennies McFerren then scored his first career touchdown on a 9-yard run to give Southeast a 31-20 lead with 10:35 left in the third quarter.
Ezequiel Rivera kicked a 42-yard field goal before
Josh Nicks crossed the goal line on a 3-yard plunge for his first career TD, giving the Redhawks a 38-23 advantage at the 4:08 mark.
On the next drive after another CMU touchdown, Scheible hit
Spencer Davis for a 65-yard touchdown pass with 11:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Haynes would score his fourth rushing touchdown on a 1-yard carry to narrow Southeast's lead to 45-37 with 6:34 left to play, but Southeast came right back with a 39-yard touchdown run by
Ron Coleman.
Will Eichman hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from Logan Cornish to cut the lead to 52-44 at the 3:39 mark.
On the ensuing kickoff, CMU attempted an onside kick and did recover the football. However, an illegal formation penalty by the Eagles forced a re-kick.
Southeast successfully recovered the Eagles second onside attempt and completed the scoring when Vucic kicked a 24-yard field goal with 18 seconds on the clock.
Scheible completed 11-of-21 passes and scored a total of four touchdowns. He also averaged 6.6 yards per carry en route to his second 100-yard rushing game of the season. Scheible finished with a career-high 355 yards of total offense and moved to third all-time in career pass completions at Southeast.
McFerren fell one yard shy of a 100-yard effort when he ran for 99 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries.
Coleman followed with 62 yards and a touchdown.
Davis led the way with three catches for 73 yards and a TD, while Ahamefule and King also added one touchdown reception apiece.
Defensively,
Blake Peiffer recorded a career-high 18 tackles, including nine solo stops. He now has 117 tackles in 2011, marking the first Redhawk to get 100 tackles in a season since Nick Stauffer had a school record 150 in 2008. Peiffer, the Ohio Valley Conference leader in tackles, has finished with 10 or more tackles in seven-straight games.
Iosefa rushed for a game-high 119 yards and a touchdown to lead CMU. Haynes added four rushing touchdowns, as well.
The Redhawks (539) and Eagles (436) teamed up for 975 total yards.
Southeast, which has won eight of its last nine games at home, hosts nationally-ranked Jacksonville State on Nov. 12.
