First Annual Walk for Women's Athletics Reaches Goals

April 28, 2008

WALK FOR WOMEN'S ATHLETICS PHOTO GALLERY

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Monday, April 28, 2008) Over 250 participants showed up at Houck Field House on a perfect Saturday morning to participate in the First Annual Walk for Women's Athletics. What resulted was over $22,000 raised for the enhancement of the athletic department's women's athletics scholarship fund.

The event started with registration inside of Houck Field House and a few words from Southeast Missouri State University President Dr. Kenneth W. Dobbins, Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Women's Administrator Cindy Gannon, Women's Walk Chair Kimberly Vance Mothershead and Redhawks volleyball player Molly Davis. Afterwards the 250-plus in attendance went outside for the official start of the event where Mrs. Mothershead cut the start ribbon and off the walkers went on a pre-selected walking course around the university that covered roughly 1.6 miles.

Afterwards the walkers were greeted with a brunch from Chartwells Catering and were able to pick up their door prizes for participating. The highlight was the random drawing for various prizes including a vacation package to St .Thomas in the Caribbean, a vacation to Hawaii, St. Louis Cardinals Tickets, a bicycle and other great prizes.

"Overall the day was perfect," commented Gannon. "The weather, the turnout, the atmosphere; you couldn't ask for anything better. The money raised will make a big difference in the continued success of our female student-athletes here at Southeast. I just want to thank the sponsors, the team captains, the walkers and all the athletes that had a hand in making this happen. The bar has been set for next year's event and I only see it getting bigger and better in the future"
