CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast football announced the hiring of Troy Dumas as the new linebackers coach Tuesday. Dumas is a former All-American linebacker at Nebraska and played in the National Football League with the Kansas City Chiefs, St. Louis Rams and Denver Broncos.
Most recently, he served as the defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and weight room supervisor at Doane College, an NAIA institution in Crete, Neb. He is a member of the American Coaches Association and Nebraska Coaches Association.
"This is a great opportunity to work with an experienced coaching staff that is determined to turn Southeast into a winning program," Dumas said.
At Doane, Dumas was responsible for the overall play of the defense and assisted with recruiting in-state and out-of-state. He was also the position coach for the middle and outside linebackers. In addition to the day-to-day football operations, Dumas was responsible for supervision of the weight room. He created in-season and off-season workouts for the football team.
Prior to coaching at Doane, Dumas was an assistant coach at Cheyenne Central High School in Cheyenne, Wyo. He coached linebackers and defensive ends on both the varsity and freshman teams.
Dumas played his collegiate football at the University of Nebraska from 1991-94 under legendary head coach Tom Osborne. He was a member of four straight Big Eight Conference championship teams that competed in the Federal Express Orange Bowl for four consecutive seasons. He played defensive back during his first three seasons before moving to linebacker for the 1994 season, when the the Cornhuskers finished 13-0 and won the national championship. He was a college teammate of current Southeast assistants Brian Boerboom, Lorenzo Brinkley, Chris Norris and Kenny Wilhite.
Following his senior season, he was named an honorable mention All-American by the NFL Draft Report. He was an Associated Press first team All-Big Eight selection and was a semi-finalist for the Dick Butkus Award that goes to that nation's top linebacker. Dumas was named the Nebraska State Troopers Defensive Player of the Game against Colorado and UCLA.
After his standout college career, Dumas was drafted in the 3rd round, 97th overall, by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1995 NFL Draft. He played linebacker and special teams for the Chiefs and was a member of the 1996 AFC West Division champions. In 1997, he earned the effort and special teams game balls for his performance against the Buffalo Bills. He then joined the St. Louis Rams for two seasons and concluded his NFL career with the Denver Broncos in 1999.
Originally from Riverside, Calif., Dumas graduated from Nebraska in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in Human Resources and Family Sciences. In 1994, he volunteered for the Husker Outreach Program.
Dumas replaces George Darlington, who accepted the defensive coordinator position at the University of San Diego.
