THE TEAMS: After ending a five-game losing streak with a 64-63 win over Western Illinois on Sunday, the Redhawks are 3-8. The Redhawks have wins over Longwood, Culver-Stockton and Western Illinois with road losses to New Mexico, Kansas State, Iowa, Western Illinois and Bradley, a neutral court loss to Oakland and home losses to Austin Peay and Tennessee State.
Arkansas State is 8-3 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves have wins over Murray State and UT Martin from the OVC and Lyon, Ball State, Central Baptist, Mississippi Valley State, Florida International and Indiana State. ASU has losses to Mississippi, Missouri State and Arkansas-Little Rock.
The Red Wolves have a balanced scoring attack with only one player, 6-5 Donald Boone, averaging in double figures with 12.6 points per game.
THE COACHES: Zac Roman is 3-8 in his first season as Redhawks acting head coach.
John Brady is 8-3 in his first season at ASU and is 289-219 in his 18th year as a collegiate head coach. He was coach at LSU in 2000 when the Tigers beat the Redhawks 64-61 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
THE SERIES: Southeast leads the series 38-24. The teams last met in 2002 with ASU claiming an 83-71 season opening win in Jonesboro.
**REDHAWKS NOTES**
REDHAWKS FROM THE LINE: Southeast is shooting .749 from the free throw line. LaMont Russell leads the team , shooting .850 at the line while Kenard Moore is shooting .821, Jajuan Maxwell .769, Jaycen Herring .766 and Calvin Williams .746. Williams was 11-13 from the line in Sunday's win over Western Illinois.
WILLIAMS LEADS SCORERS: Calvin Williams, 6-9, has taken over the team scoring lead after a career-high 25 points against Western Illinois. Williams averages 16.2 points per game. He is shooting .572 from the field and .746 from the line. He leads the team in blocks with 22. Williams leads the OVC in field goal percentage and ranks second in blocked shots.
TRIO ON THE BOARDS: The rebounding trio of Jajuan Maxwell, LaMont Russell and Calvin Williams is averaging over 21 rebounds per game. Russell leads the team with 7.1 per game while Maxwell and Williams each average 6.9 per game.
MOORE WARMS UP FROM THREE: Senior Kenard Moore had been struggling from 3-point range, but warmed up against Bradley with 5-11 from three on the way to a team-high 19 points. He was 2-5 in Sunday's win over Western Illinois. Moore is shooting .292 from three on the season. He averages 15.5 points per game.
RUSSELL HITS THE BOARDS: Junior college transfer LaMont Russell pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds against a big and physical Kansas State team. Russell averages a team-high 7.1 rebounds per game.
HERRING LEADS VS. LOBOS: Senior Jaycen Herring, 6-5, led Southeast in the season opening loss at New Mexico. He had 21 points including 3-6 threes and 6-9 free throws. Herring, who had 17 points against Austin Peay, averages 13.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
WILLIAMS NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT: Junior Calvin Williams, 6-9, was named to the all-tournament team in Las Vegas. He had 22 points against Longwood and also had 11 rebounds to give him his first double-double of the season.
JONES AT THE POINT: Junior college transfer Bijon Jones missed Sunday's game with Western Illinois because of a leg injury suffered during practice. He played all 40-minutes in the season opening loss at New Mexico. Despite playing at altitude, Jones went the distance with 8 points, 5 rebounds and a team-high 3 assists. Against Longwood, he clinched the game with two free throws with 9.0-seconds remaining. Jones averages 2.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and a team high 2.9 assists per game.
HILL DEFENDS AND SCORES: Junior Johnny Hill is the Redhawks top defender and draws the assignment of guarding the opponents top guard or forward. Hill, who had a career high 19 points vs. Tennessee State, averages 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
MAXWELL HAS CAREER HIGH: Jajuan Maxwell had a career-high 16 points against Bradley. He averages 7.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
KIRK RETURNS: After missing two games with an ankle injury suffered at Kansas State, junior college transfer Israel Kirk, 6-7, played 13-minutes vs. Longwood with 4 points and 2 rebounds. He was the top rebounder against New Mexico with 8. Kirk averages 2.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Calvin Williams and Jajuan Maxwell have each had double-doubles this season. Williams had 22 points and 11 rebounds vs. Longwood and Maxwell had 13 points and 10 rebounds vs. Kansas State.
SHORT ROSTER: The Redhawks will have only four players in uniform who played on last year's team. Jaycen Herring, Kenard Moore, Calvin Williams and Johnny Hill all played last season. Jajuan Maxwell played for the Redhawks in 2006-2007 but missed last season with a knee injury. Three walkons will be including Marty Dames, 6-2, Jon Watson, 6-5, and Brandon Smith, 5-11.
FOOT SIDELINES DREW: Junior Jimmie Drew has missed every game with a foot injury and remains day to day. He is doubtful for the Western Illinois game.
AT THE SHOW ME CENTER: Southeast is 2-2 at the Show Me Center this season, but is 207-92 (.693) since the facility opened in 1987.
GAME TIME CHANGE: The Southeast game on New Years Eve against SIU Edwardsville will be played at 5:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.
REDHAWKS IN THE PROS: Four former Southeast basketball players are currently playing professional basketball in Europe and another is playing for his home country. Roy Booker, 2005-2006, is playing with Etha of Greece in the top league of European basketball, Reggie Golson, 2003-2005, plays in Germany, Michael Rembert, 2006-2008, plays in Austria and William "Bud" Eley, 1996-2000, plays in Spain. Calvert White, 1996-1998, plays for the Virgin Islands national team.
SOUTHEAST PICKED 8th IN OVC: The Southeast Missouri State basketball team has been picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll by league coaches and sports information directors. Murray State was picked first with Tennessee-Martin second and Austin Peay third. Morehead State was chosen for fourth followed by Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, Eastern Kentucky, Southeast Missouri, Eastern Illinois and Jacksonville State.
CHALK TALK: Southeast basketball coaches will host a Chalk Talk prior to all home games at the Show Me Center. Coaches will discuss the upcoming game and answer question from the fans. The Chalk Talk will be in the North Meeting Room at the Show Me Center and will be at 5 p.m. prior to the New Years Eve game with SIU Edwardsville. The Chalk Talk is open to the public.
REDHAWKS HAVE ST. LOUIS RADIO STATION: The Southeast Basketball Network includes Team 1380 Radio in St. Louis. The network operated by Mississippi River Radio, will be anchored by 100,000 watt K-103 FM in Cape Girardeau. Other network stations include KSIM, Sikeston;, KWOC, Poplar Bluff and KMAL, Malden. Erik Sean will be the play-by-play voice of Redhawks basketball with Todd Bonacki adding commentary at home games and Ron Hines adding color during the road games.
HOME GAMES ON KFVS12.com: All Southeast home games are video streamed free of charge by KFVS12.com. The multi-camera WebCast will be presented live around the world at KFVS12.com, and then archived on the web site for users to watch at their convenience. Both the live presentation and the archived versions will be available free of charge. The archived version will be posted shortly after the end of coverage.
OVC SPORTS.TV: All Southeast OVC games will be video streamed on the Ohio Valley Conference's premium website, OVCSports.tv which can be accessed by logging on to the league's official website, OVCSports.com. Subscriptions are available on an annual, seasonal and per event basis.
REDHAWKS BASKETBALL WITH Zac Roman: Roman will have a weekly television show on WQWQ-TV, the Heartland's CW. The show can be seen at 11:05 p.m. each Monday night and is hosted by Heartland Sports Director Todd Richards. The show is also shown on Charter Cable Channel 11 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday's at 8 p.m. It is also run on the KFVS-TV/Southeast Weather Channel (Charter Channel 113) on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m.
TUESDAY AT BEEF O'BRADY'S: Zac Roman will be featured on a live radio show each Tuesday noon at Beef O'Brady's in Cape Girardeau. The show on KGIR, 1220 AM, will run from noon until 1 p.m. and will be hosted by Erik Sean.
SID STREAK: Southeast SID Ron Hines has worked 833 consecutive men's basketball games. He has not missed a game since 1980.
NEXT FOR THE REDHAWKS: Southeast will play at home vs. SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday, Dec. 31 to close out the 2008 portion of the son. The SIU Edwardsville game
