CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State baseball head coach Mark Hogan announced the signing of Tyrell Cummings (Muskogee, Okla./Seminole State CC) to a National Letter of Intent. Cummings is an outfielder from Seminole State College in Seminole, Okla., and will join the squad in the fall with two years of eligibility remaining.
"Tyrell is a big-time impact player and will make an immediate impact in the middle of our lineup and defensively in 2008," Hogan said. "He had an outstanding junior college career and we are proud to not only have a quality player, but a quality person as well."
As a sophomore in 2007, Cummings led the team with 68 hits, 20 doubles, 49 RBIs, 194 at-bats and 57 games played. He also finished second on the squad with a .351 batting average to go along with eight home runs, two triples and two stolen bases. During his freshman campaign in 2006, he batted .291 with 39 hits, seven doubles, two home runs, one triple and 20 RBIs in 39 games.
"Tyrell's signing is the final piece that will solidify the middle of the lineup for the Redhawks in 2008," Hogan said.
Cummings joins Kieran Bradford (Brisbane, Australia/Three Rivers CC), Matt Hester (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Cape Central), Jake Kemper (Hillsboro, Mo./Jefferson CC), Brad LaBruyere (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Cape Central), Trenton Moses (Advance, Mo./Advance), Ryan Poole (Poplar Bluff, Mo./Three Rivers CC), Tony Spencer (Hillsboro, Mo./Mineral Area CC) and Justin Wheeler (Lakewood, Calif./Golden West CC), who all previously signed to play at Southeast in 2008. Assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Jeff Dodson played a pivotal role in recruiting and signing all the athletes.
He is the son of Luther and Brenda Cummings and has four siblings, Adrian, Tacuma, Tristan and Luther, Jr.
