Southeast Missouri State volleyball suffered its second loss at the Arkansas Invitational earlier today after falling to the host Lady Razorbacks in three games (16-30, 27-30, 21-30) at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, Ark. With the win, Arkansas improves its record to 6-0, while the Redhawks fall to 1-5 on the year.
Senior outside hitter Jessica Koeper (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) led Southeast with 12 kills and fellow classmate Jamie Baumstark (Hermann, Mo./Hermann) produced a match-high 32 assists. Junior middle blocker Brenna Schlader (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) posted 11 kills and tallied a .500 hitting clip and freshman libero Molly Davis (Muncie, Ind./Burris) equaled her season-high with 13 digs. Junior outside hitter Brittany Hastings (El Dorado, Kan./Circle) contributed eight kills and freshman middle blocker Hannah Weis (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) added four blocks (one solo, three assisted) for the Redhawks.
Arkansas opened a 4-2 lead in the first game on consecutive kills by Kele Brewer, but the Redhawks climbed back to within a point (5-4) on a Baumstark kill and a service ace by freshman libero Taylor Harbster (Grand Prairie, Tex./South Grand Prairie). The Lady Razorbacks then regrouped and posted a decisive 19-6 run, which included 11 consecutive service points and three service aces from Caira Daugherty, to capture a 24-10 advantage. Back-to-back Schlader kills later closed Southeast's deficit to 24-14 before both teams split the final 12 points with Arkansas claiming 1-0 lead in the match.
The Redhawks snapped an early 4-4 tie on a Schlader kill in the second stanza and used three straight service points from Davis to gain a 7-4 lead. Southeast later hiked its lead to 23-19 on a service error forcing the Lady Razorbacks to burn a timeout. Arkansas came back with a short 6-1 scoring drive to capture its first lead of the game at 25-24 on a Denita Koleva kill. After a Hastings kills evened the score at 25-25, another Koleva kill helped the Lady Razorbacks score five of the final seven points to enter the break with a two-game advantage.
In the third game, Arkansas gained a slim 11-9 lead on an Amy Allison kill before Southeast used three straight service points from Harbster to take the lead at 13-11. Kills by Daugherty and Destiny Clark evened the score at 13-13, but four more service points by Davis helped the Redhawks regain a 16-13 advantage. Jessica Dorrell scored two service aces to give Arkansas a 17-16 lead and both teams seesaw the next couple of points until a Weis kill knotted the score at 18-18. The Lady Razorbacks finally closed the match with an 11-3 run, which included six combined kills by Dorell and Allison.
Koleva (16 kills, 12 digs) and Dorrell (15 kills, 12 digs) each posted double-doubles to lead Arkansas, while Daugherty added 30 assists, seven digs and four service aces. Allison produced 11 kills and four blocks (one solo, three assisted) and Ashley Miller had 13 digs for the Lady Razorbacks.
Southeast takes on Stephen F. Austin in its final match at the Arkansas Invitational later this afternoon at 4 p.m.
