CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - (Monday, December 13, 2004) The Ohio Valley Conference announced that junior center Tatiana Conceicao (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Western Nebraska CC) was named the OVC Newcomer of the Week for the week ending December 11. Conceicao was selected based on votes from OVC sports information directors.
It is Conceicao's third time winning the honor this season (second straight) and the fourth straight week a Southeast player has won the award.
Conceicao averaged 19.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last week as Southeast competed in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. Conceicao led the team in scoring in both games that Southeast played in. Against host Hawai'i she scored 22 points on 8-14 shooting (57-percent). She made six of her seven foul shots (86-percent) and recorded five rebounds. She also recorded one assist, one block and one steal in Southeast's 79-69 loss.
Against BYU she finished 16 points. This time shooting 6-15 from the field (40-percent), but five of her misses were from three-point range. She made four of her six foul shots. She also recorded four rebounds, two assists and one steal in the 62-52 loss.
For her efforts she was named to the All-Tournament team.
For the season Conceicao is averaging a team-high 20.6 ppg. She ranks 6th in the NCAA in scoring. She also ranks 9th in the NCAA in steals at 3.1 per game.
She averages 5.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. She has gone over double-digits in every game this season including four games of twenty points or more.
Conceicao continues the amazing streak of Newcomer of the Week award winners that Southeast has won to nine straight weeks dating back to last season. Since the inception of the award during the 2002-03 season, Southeast has won the honor 21 out of a possible 30 weeks.
Conceicao and the Southeast team will travel to Chicago, Illinois on Saturday to face the University of Illinois-Chicago. Tipoff is set for 7:00 PM and can be heard on C-106 FM or on gosoutheast.com.
