Former Southeast Player Making Name for Himself in Minors

Aug. 27, 2003

Former Southeast right-handed pitcher Todd Pennington has been dominated the Single-A Sally League this year. A 2001 draft pick in the 46th (out of 50) round, Pennington is making other teams regret their neglect. In the Sally League, he has allowed three runs in 37 innings for a minute 0.73 ERA. His 15.7 strikeouts per nine innings was the best in the minors, and opponents are hitting just .113 against him.

Pennington's dominance has led some to take notice. Baseball America picked him as the top player taken in the late rounds of the 2001 draft.

While at Southeast, Pennington showed similar dominance. In 2001 he was the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year. He set a team record with 12 wins and also led the team in ERA, strikeouts, innings pitched, games started, complete games, shutouts and opponent's batting average.

After posting such outstanding numbers in Single-A, the Cleveland Indians organization has promoted him to Double-A Akron.
