Cape Girardeau, Mo. (June 10, 2003) - Former Southeast Missouri pitcher and Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, Todd Pennington (McClure, Ill.) has been named to the North squad in the South Atlantic League All-Star game to be played on June 24th in Lexington, Ky. at Applebee's Park.
Pennington, now playing for the Single A Lake County Captains, was the OVC's Pitcher of the Year in 2001 after leading the nation his junior season with a 1.33 ERA and going 12-1 on the year. The 12 wins was a school record before Tim Alvarez broke it this season with 14. Pennington was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 46th round that season.
Pennington is 1-1 on the season with a 0.86 ERA in 20 games. He has 10 saves in 12 chances for the Captains and has struck out 44 batters in 21 innings this season. He is part of the league's best pitching staff with a 2.78 team ERA and his .158 opponent's batting average has also helped the Captains to a league-low .237 opponent's average.
Pennington's manager, Luis Rivera, will manage the North squad as he has led his team to a league-best 45-20 record. Pennington will join eight other Captains playing in the All-Star Game.
