The Southeast Missouri State Indians raised their season record to 4-2 on the season with a convincing 80-63 victory over the Kangaroos of the University of Missouri-Kansas City (2-3).
UMKC jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on a three-pointer by Brandon Temple. The 'Roos extended their lead to five points after a jumper by Michael Watson made it 7-2. But at 15:06 Southeast's Dainmon Gonnor tied it 8-8.
The Kangaroos took the lead once more with a free throw by Mike English, but Mike Nelke gave Southeast the lead for good with a three-pointer at 13:55.
Southeast went into the locker room with a 36-28 lead, after shooting 50 percent from the field, including better than 50 percent from beyond the arc. In the second half, it was much of the same, as Southeast extended its lead to as many as 24 points with less than five minutes left to play.
The Indians out shot UMKC 51 percent to 37 percent, and outrebounded the Kangaroos 44-27. For the game, Southeast shot 42 percent from three-point range.
Dainmon Gonnor and Derek Winans each led Southeast with 15 points in the contest. Gonnor was 7-for-13 from the field, while Winans hit 4-of-7 from three-point land. Gonnor is averaging exactly 15 points on the season, which leads all Indian scorers. Winans is second on the team, averaging 11.5.
Senior Brandon Griffin scored 11 points for Southeast, while juniors Brett Hale and Mike Nelke each had 10 points. Both Hale and Nelke were 2-of-4 from three-point range.
Southeast junior forward Reggie Golson had a big game down low, as he picked up 12 rebounds on the night-a season-high for the Indians this year.
UMKC guard Michael Watson led all scorers on the night as he had 22 points on 8-for-19 from the floor. Forward Brandon Lipsey added 12 points, and Javon Clark chipped in with 11.
The Indians will have steep competition in their next game, as they head to Fayetteville, Ark., to play the Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas. The game will be Dec. 9 at 7:05 p.m.
