Southeast Volleyball Knocks Out SIU In Four

Carbondale, Ill. (September 10, 2002) - The Southeast Missouri State Otahkian Volleyball team won its third match in a row as they defeated the Salukis of Southern Illinois by the score of three games to one. The win moved the Otahks record to 4-4, and SIU moved to 6-2.

Southeast started off game two having to come from behind but they tied the game at seven, and then went on a run to bring the score to a 14-9 lead. Southeast led the game for the better part of the duration, but SIU made a run at the Otahks and tied the game at 28. A kill from senior hitter Bobbi Carlile, and an ace by senior hitter Emily Johnson sealed the game, however, for the Otahks as they took game one 30-28.

Southeast controlled game two from the start as they jumped out to an 19-10 lead. SIU scored a quick point, but three straight points by the Otahks led to an SIU timeout and moved the Southeast lead to 22-11. The Otahks would not let up as an ace for junior setter Emily Scannell secured game two for Southeast by the score of 30-15.

SIU went ahead for the first time in game three with an 10-9 lead, but Southeast came back to make the score 12-10. Both teams traded points on the way to a 15 all tie, that triggered a Southeast timeout. SIU ran the score to 20-16, before a kill by Carlile stopped the Saluki run. Three straight points by the Salukis, however, caused another Southeast timeout and ran the score to 26-18. Southeast mounted a comeback, but couldn't hold off SIU as the Dawgs won game three 30-23.

Game four was back and fourth as both teams had an answer for the others score. Neither team took control as the lead changed hands throughout the game. Southeast took a two point lead at 24-22 late in the game and forced an SIU timeout. Southeast moved its lead to 26-23 and SIU called another timeout. Southeast won game four by the score of 30-25, and the match by the score of three games to one.

Southeast was led by a career performance from junior hitter Sarah Frost. Frost raked in 24 kills, a career high and hit .341 for the match. She also pulled in seven digs. Carlile had her fifth double-double of the season as she had 18 kills and 16 digs. Scannell had 56 assists on the night giving her 3,029 for her career at Southeast moving her into third all-time on the career list just in front of Amy Henken. Next up on the list is Tuba Meto with 5,003. Junior libero Suzanne Gundlach once again led the defense with 19 digs.

Next up for the Otahks will be the University of Kansas Jayhawk Invitational. Southeast will face the host Kansas Jayhawks on Friday at noon, then Purdue on Friday at 5 p.m. They will finish off the tournament with an 11 a.m. match against Marquette University. They then come home to open up their home schedule with a match against Saint Louis University on September, 17 at 6 p.m.
