THE TEAMS: Southeast Missouri is 3-4 overall after losing to Southern Illinois 85-69 on Saturday night. The Indians, who beat Oakland City 88-66 earlier in the week, finished 1-2 in the University Hoops Classic Nov. 28 to Dec. 1 in New Orleans. Southeast opened the tournament with an 89-75 win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee but lost to Indiana State 68-55 and Tulane, 81-60. The Indians opened the season with a 83-71 loss at Arkansas State and had a home opening 82-63 win over Central Methodist.

After finishing 18-11 last season, UMKC is off to an 0-4 start with losses to Robert Morris, Norfolk State, Denver and Colorado. The Kangaroos play at Loyola of Chicago on Tuesday night prior to the Saturday night matchup with Southeast Missouri.

THE COACHES: Gary Garner is 85-67 in his sixth season at Southeast and is 332-231 in his 20th season as a collegiate head coach. Rich Zvosec is 18-15 in his second season at UMKC and is 121-163 in his 12th season as a collegiate head coach.

THE SERIES: Southeast Missouri leads the series 4-0. The teams last met during the 1985-86 season with Southeast claiming a 70-60 win at Houck Field House in Cape Girardeau.

SOUTHEAST NOTES

Griffin Averages Double-Double: Junior college transfer Brandon Griffin, the OVC Newcomer of the Week for the second week in a row, is averaging a double-double with 14.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. He had 22 points and 11 rebounds against undefeated SIU, ranked second in the national mid-major poll this week. Griffin was the leading rebounder in the University Hoops Classic and was named to the all-tournament team. He had 33 rebounds in the three tournament games. Griffin had 14 points and four rebounds against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 17 points and 11 rebounds against Indiana State and 14 points and eight rebounds vs. Tulane. Griffin had eight rebounds at Arkansas State despite playing only 26 minutes because of foul trouble. Griffin had 19 points and eight rebounds vs. Central Methodist

Scheer Has Big Tourney: Senior Tim Scheer battled back from an injury to have an impressive three games in New Orleans. In the three tournament games, he averaged 18.3 points per game. He missed the Arkansas State game and the final exhibition game with a strained right calf muscle, but saw limited playing time against Central Methodist. Scheer, who averages 13.3 points per game, had 15 points and two rebounds vs. SIU. Scheer has played in 73 games at Southeast and has 660 career points and 390 career rebounds.

Winans Selected 2nd Team Preseason All-OVC: Derek Winans, last season's OVC Freshman of the Year, was named second team preseason All-OVC in voting by coaches and sports information directors. Winans led the Indians in scoring (14.9 ppg), 3-pointers (53), steals (45), assists (80), minutes played (34.8) and was third in free throw percentage (.797) and rebounding (4.6). With 402 points scored, Winans ranks as the top freshman scorer at Southeast since William "Bud" Eley scored 465 points during the 1995-96 season. Winans was the Indians' rebounding leader in OVC games with an average of 5.3 per game. In OVC statistics, Winans was ranked in nine different statistical categories. A 4.0 student, Winans is a two-time OVC Medal of Honor winner. On the season, Winans leads the team in scoring with 14.6 points per game and assists with 4.1 per game.

Hence Responds: Junior Damarcus Hence was 6-9 from the field and 1-2 from three in the win over Oakland City to end a brief shooting slump. He led the Indians in the season opener at Arkansas State with a career-high 24 points and eight rebounds. Hence was 8-12 from the field, 2-5 from three and 6-8 from the line. Against Central Methodist, Hence had 10 points and eight rebounds and against SIU he had four points and three rebounds. He currently averages 10.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. Hence is the second leading rebounder for the Indians.

Golson Debut A Success: Junior college transfer Reggie Golson, who has been recovering from minor knee surgery, saw his first playing time in the win over Oakland City. He scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds in just 14-minutes playing time. Golson was 5-9 from the field. He did not play in the SIU game because of soreness in the knee. Crader in the Middle: Sophomore Adam Crader, 6-11, 250, has averaged 8.7-minutes per game with an average of 2.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. He is shooting .636 from the field and 100% from the line.

King Big vs. SIU: Demetrius King came off the bench to score 17 points and pull down five rebounds vs. SIU. He also had one assist, one block and one steal. King was 4-6 from the floor, 3-4 from three and 6-7 from the line. For the season, King averages 6.9 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Hale Shut Down: Sophomore guard Brett Hale was held scoreless in the SIU game. On the season, Hale averages 9.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Roberts at the Point: Kevin Roberts continues to log a lot of time at the point guard position. He played 26-minutes in the SIU game and had a game and had a team-high six assists.

Grapperhaus Debuts: True freshman Cole Grapperhaus played seven minutes in the season opener with two points and two blocks. He did not score in seven minutes played vs. Central Methodist. Grapperhaus has three blocks in three games played.

Gary Garner Radio Show: Gary Garner has a live radio show on KGIR, 1220 AM, each Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Show Me's Restaurant in Cape Girardeau. Erik Sean is host for the hour long show.

SID Streak: Southeast SID Ron Hines has worked 641 consecutive basketball games at Southeast. The streak is the longest in Division I basketball. Hines has not missed a game since 1980.

New Logo: A new supplemental logo and word mark were promoted at the SIU game. The new logo does not replace the traditional SE, but is an additional logo for merchandise and promotions.

Next Game: Southeast will go on the road to play at Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The Indians will host Southwest Missouri State on Saturday, Dec. 21, 7 p.m.
