CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (April 10, 2001) - Southeast got a huge day from SS/P Jenny Doehring in sweeping a doubleheader from OVC foe Tennessee-Martin (6-34, 4-8 OVC) on Tuesday. Doehring led Southeast (13-15, 7-3) on the mound in game one and at the plate in game two as the Otahkians picked up two important OVC victories.
In game one, Southeast found itself in trouble early in the first inning. However, Doehring got herself out of the jam by striking out RF Courtney Wilson with the bases loaded and two-outs to end the Skyhawks threat.
UT-Martin threatened again in the top of the third and had base runners at second and third with two outs. After a passed ball it looked like UT-Martin DP Jordan Myers would score, but a great recovery and throw from C Renee Enos to Doehring nailed Myers at the plate and once again got Southeast out of the inning unscathed.
The Otahkians finally got on the board in the bottom of the third, when Brooke Nett tripled to right center with two outs. Kemi Rampi then singled to right field to score Nett and extend her hitting streak to a season-high, 10 games. The next batter, Doehring, lined a single to center field and after a fielding error, Rampi ended up scoring to put Southeast up 2-0.
That would be all the runs that Southeast would need, as Doehring (9-7) threw the shutout, her fifth of the season. She allowed seven hits and struck out three to pick up her ninth victory of the season.
In game two, Southeast wasted no time scoring as the team batted around in the first inning. Doehring got the inning started when she hit a three-run homerun to left-center, scoring Rampi and Nett and giving the Otahks a 3-0 lead. After Enos reached base on a error, Courtney Eklund drove her home with a single to center that forced Martin pitcher Tracy Fryer from the game without having recorded an out.
Later in the first, DP Amy Thompson got her second career hit, this time a two-run homerun to left-center off Skyhawk relief pitcher Molly McKinney, that scored Emmy Kisaka and gave Southeast a 6-0 first inning lead.
UTM would respond in the top of the second adding three runs as they batted around. The Skyhawks loaded the bases on two walks and a single and scored one run on an error, another on a RBI-single by 3B Amy Harclerode and the final on a bases loaded walk. Southeast pitcher Kristen King got herself out of further trouble by getting two ground ball force outs at home and a grounder back to the mound to limit UTM to only three runs.
Doehring struck again in the fourth, hitting her second homerun of the game, this time a two-run shot to center field that scored Rampi. The two homeruns in one game ties her on the all-time Southeast list with three other individuals, for most homeruns in one game.
Southeast scored in final run in the fifth, when Doehring walked with the bases loaded to force in the Otahks 11th run and end the game after five inning due to mercy rule.
Doehring finished game two 3-3 with two homeruns, a single, and six RBI's.
Thompson, a St. Louis native, ended up 2-3 in game two with two RBI's.
Rampi extended her hitting streak in game two to 11 games.
Southeast head coach Lana Richmond won her 596th and 597th career games, putting her only three games away from a milestone 600th win.
