Southeast Punter Makes All-American Team

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (January 9, 2001) - Southeast Missouri State University punter Jason Witczak (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wisc.) was named to the 2000 Football Gazette NCAA 1-AA All-American Team sponsored by Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette.

Witczak, a transfer from Marshall University, was the leading punter in the Ohio Valley Conference this past season. He punted 48 times for 1983-yards and a 41.3 average. Witczak put nine punts inside Indian opponents 20-yard line and had a long punt of 66-yards, which was second in the OVC.

Witczak gained national recognition earlier in the 2000 season when he was named Don Hansen's National Special Team Player of the Week following his performance in Southeast's 28-25 upset of then 12th ranked Illinois State on September 16. In that game Witczak punted 11 times for a 43-yard average with a long punt of 62-yards. He also had punts of 50, 53 and 58 in the game to help pin the Redbirds deep in their own territory and lead the Indians to the upset victory.

For Southeast Witczak also handled the kickoff and field goal duties, making 5-9 field goals, including 3-4 from between 30-39 yards and 2-3 from between 40-49 yards. He also converted on 15-16 PAT attempts and finished third on the team in scoring with 30 points.
