Redhawk Volleyball Downs Western Illinois to Open OVC Play

MACOMB, Ill. — Southeast Missouri defeated Western Illinois 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-10) on Friday. The Redhawks hit .287 with 36 kills and 10 blocks while holding the Leathernecks to a .000 hitting percentage.
SEMO (8-6, 1-0 OVC) erased a 6-4 deficit in the first set with seven straight points, with Ellie Burns serving through the run and adding an ace before assisting consecutive Alaina Lester kills for 10-6 and 11-6. Southeast Missouri stayed in front from there and finished the set 25-16, reaching set point on a Reagan Nelson kill before a Leathernecks (0-11, 0-1 OVC) attack error ended it.
The Redhawks created the separation in the second set on Nina Schuberth's serve, scoring four straight points from 9-7 to 13-7 behind two Lester kills, a Leathernecks attack error, and a Nelson kill. Earlier, SEMO had answered a 4-3 deficit with five of the next six points to move in front. Nelson added kills on the final two SEMO points as the visitors closed out the set, 25-17.
SEMO broke open the third set with a 7-0 run, turning a 4-3 edge into an 11-3 lead. Burns served the final six points of that run, adding an ace and assists on kills by Lucy Arndt and Lester. Southeast Missouri finished the set at 25-10, with Lester closing it on a kill from Brooklyn Ritter.
