Soccer Opens Season at Home Thursday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri Soccer team opens its 2026 season at home hosting Southern Illinois University Thursday at 6 pm in Houck Field.
The home opener is also a Chick-Fil-A Family Day with a meal card giveaway.
Year Two
Head coach John Klein and his staff return for their second season. Klein notched his first win last season defeating UT Martin 2-1. He followed that up with a win in the next game at Western Illinois 5-0 as well. His first season at the Division I ended 2-15-2.
The Squad
Returners
The Redhawks had a lot of turnover on the roster but they returned 10 players from last year's roster. Notable players that returned include Hayley Hogenmiller, who led the team with four goals and 10 points. Madison Geisler is a returning goalkeeper, Rachel Kretzer and Laia Amat both return in the midfield along with sophomore forwards Riley Henderson and Maya Domian. Kristin Anderson and Sophie Shrum also return despite missing most of last season with injuries.
Newcomers
The roster includes 17 newcomers to the squad with seven freshman and 10 transfers. Notable transfers include Natalie Allison in goal came from Columbia College, junior midfielders Jasmine Barney and Molly-Kate Lundy both transferred in from Seminole State College, the defense was bolstered with Carla Vizuete and Lillian Chronister joining the team.
Strong Bond
Transfer goalkeeper Natalie Allison is back with coach Klein who coached her for two years at Columbia College where she had success. In her three years she totaled 161saves, named to NAIA All-American teams twice along with winning the AMC Freshman of the Year award in her first season.
Series History
The Redhawks and Salukis have met six times with the series split 3-to-3. SIU is on a two-match win streak which includes winning last season 2-0 in Carbondale. The series dates to 2004 when SEMO winning 1-0 and the two teams didn't meet again until 2019 where SEMO also won 2-0.
Players to Watch
Returning midfielders Rachel Kretzer and Laia Amat were cited by the Ohio Valley Conference as players to watch. Kretzer is a sophomore from Glen Carbon, Illinois and she totaled one assist as a freshman while playing 1,490 minutes, which was the second most on the team. Amat, a senior from Sabadell, Spain, and dished out two assists and played 1,042 minutes.
The Schedule
After the opener against SIU, the Redhawks will be on the road for six straight matches. Returning teams from last season's schedule include traveling to Evansville, Missouri State, North Alabama, and hosting Belmont. New non-conference opponents include Saint Louis, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Western Kentucky.
OVC matches start at Western Illinois on September 27th and the first home conference match is on October 4th when Southern Indiana comes to Houck Field.
Preseason Poll
The Redhawks were selected sixth in the OVC preseason poll. Defending co-champions Lindenwood were picked to win the league over Eastern Illinois. This year the OVC also has only eight teams and every team will make the conference tournament and have a chance to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
