CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – In just one season at the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision level,
McCoy Casey established himself as one of the best players on Southeast Missouri's defense.
Casey came to SEMO by way of Trinity Valley Community College in 2024. He is from the small town of Crosby, Texas which is located less than a half-hour from Houston.
The senior outside linebacker is highly energetic, plays the game with a positive attitude and values camaraderie in his pursuit of greatness.
This preseason, Casey landed a spot on the FCS Football Central and Phil Steele All-America teams. He is SEMO's only player to garner the early All-America distinction.
"I am honored to get that recognition, but my focus is to help lead our team to the postseason," said Casey. "I want to continue to prove myself and live up to the expectations that I feel have doubled heading into my final year."
After SEMO won the Ohio Valley Conference-Big South title and advanced to the FCS Playoffs last season, it's easy to see why getting back to the postseason is a big priority for Casey.
Statistically, he recorded a team-high 11 tackles for loss and rated second with five sacks during his debut season. Overall, he was SEMO's fourth-leading tackler with 61 stops in 12 starts. Casey was voted Second-Team All-OVC-Big South, as well. He is the Redhawks top tackler back from last year.
"What happened last year is in the past," said Casey. "We have a whole new team this season. A new offensive coordinator, new players on defense. I need to keep my head on a swivel and be ready for whatever comes next. Leading SEMO to the postseason is a goal I've set my sights on, and I'm determined to make it happen."
While Casey is all business as one of the most likeable guys on the team, he is always smiling and has some unique interests that bring out his lighter side.
"I can juggle a little bit, and I started golfing in December," he said. "I regularly watch videos to work on my golf swing. I like to joke around, bring that good energy and just enjoy being happy."
Another hidden talent is Casey's passion for cooking. He loves it so much that he's considered going to culinary school and becoming a chef.
When asked what he likes to prepare, Casey said, "Fettuccine Alfredo or some type of Chicken Alfredo. That's my go-to meal for sure."
Whether it's chasing postseason dreams, swinging a golf club or whipping up a delicious meal, Casey is grateful for his opportunities that continue to unfold.
"No matter where life takes me, I'll always carry with me the lessons and memories I've had here at SEMO. It's the people, support and experiences that have made it all worthwhile."
