CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri's receiver corps will look different this upcoming 2024 season.
SEMO is working to fill the void left by its top two pass catchers in
Ryan Flournoy and
Damoriea Vick.
Flournoy, who was drafted in the sixth round by the Dallas Cowboys following the 2023 campaign, is presently second on the Cowboys' depth chart according to ESPN.com.
He led the Redhawks with 57 catches for 839 yards and six touchdowns a year ago. Flournoy played in the Reese's Bowl and participated in the NFL Combine prior to getting drafted by Dallas.
Vick was second on the team behind Flournoy with 51 receptions for 506 yards and four touchdowns.
If the season were to begin now, returnees
Kyron Downing and
Dorian Anderson along with newcomer
Tristan Smith are expected to start in SEMO's primary three-receiver set.
Downing played in nine games and started the season-opener for the Redhawks in 2023. He finished with two catches for 15 yards.
Anderson, meanwhile, started two of the first three contests last season and wound up playing in 10 games. He added 14 receptions for 126 yards and scored his only touchdown on a 4-yard pass against Robert Morris.
Smith, who stands at 6'5", 205, gives SEMO a big target. He joined the Redhawks from Hutchinson Community College where he played the last two seasons. Smith made 14 receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown a year ago.
The three players behind them, including
Donnie Cheers,
Demetrion Cannon and
Jacques Wyatt, all redshirted in 2023.
Jack Clinkenbeard is SEMO's top returning receiver from a year ago. He was fourth on the team with 27 catches for 315 yards and one touchdown. Clinkenbeard, initially a walk-on, was awarded a full scholarship at the end of the season.
Mitchell Sellers,
Anthony Westervelt,
Wesley Corbitt,
Cam Pedro,
Zyan Royal,
Brennan Remy and
Trent Shelton are the other receivers.
Sellers moves to wide receiver after making 17 receptions for 176 yards and one touchdown at tight end and Westervelt redshirted.
Corbitt, Pedro, Royal, Remy and Shelton are the rest of the newcomers.
Desmond Noird, the Redhawks recruiting coordinator a year ago, enters his first season in charge of the receivers. Noird was a wide receiver himself at Florida A&M for four seasons. He worked with the wide receivers at both Walsh University and Missouri S&T before arriving in Cape Girardeau.
SEMO will hold its first intrasquad scrimmage to conclude its first full week of preseason camp Saturday. The scrimmage is set for 8:20 a.m., CT at Houck Field.
