Women's Basketball Falls 71-52 Thursday Night at Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Southeast Missouri Women's Basketball (7-17, 4-9 OVC) fell on Thursday night by a final score of 71-52 to Eastern Illinois (11-15, 8-5 OVC) in Charleston, Ill.
 
Freshman guard Indiya Bowen scored a career-high 20 points on Thursday night, surpassing her previous mark of 19 points earlier this season. Bowen finished an impressive 50-percent from the field (8-16) and 33-percent from three (1-3). 
 
As a team, SEMO shot 20-57 from the field (20-57) and just 21-percent from three-point range (3-14). The Redhawks finished 9-13 from the charity stripe, a 69-percent mark. 
 
The Panthers were led by forward Macy McGlone and guard Charita Lewis who each scored 11 points as every Panther found the score sheet in the contest. As a team, EIU shot close to 50-percent (49.1%) from the floor on 27-55. 
 
Amiyah Buchanan and Alecia Doyle hauled in seven rebounds apiece as the Redhawks reeled in 30 rebounds. 
 
The Redhawks started the game with the first four points of the contest. Two-straight field goals from freshman Indiya Bowen, coming off 18 points last Saturday, got the Redhawks out to a 4-0 lead. 
 
EIU would score the game's next 19 points as the Redhawks faced a 6:45 scoring draught before Abby Stephens would scoop up a loose ball for a layup to halt the run. 
 
Alecia Doyle would sink a pair of free throws and the Redhawks ended the quarter on a 4-0 run and trailed 19-8. 
 
The Panthers opened the second quarter with a three-pointer from Emily Mendel to give EIU Its biggest lead of the contest. Kiyley Flowers responded with a nice move to score the layup giving SEMO its first points of the quarter. 
 
Following Flower's layup, guard Megan Barton hit her first three of the contest. Barton, coming off the bench, cashed the three from just off the right wing and SEMO was on a quick 5-0 run, trailing 22-13. 
 
SEMO would face another scoring draught, this one nearing seven minutes, as EIU would extend their lead utilizing the three pointer. Charita Lewis hit back-to-back threes to give the Panthers a 33-13 lead with 2:31 left before halftime. SEMO would call a timeout. 
 
Out of the quick break, forward Julia Sion scored on an in-bounds play under the basket to snap the scoreless minutes for SEMO. 
 
That was the last basket of the half for SEMO and at the break, SEMO trailed 35-15. 
 
As a team, SEMO was led offensively by Indiya Bowen with four points on 2-for-5 shooting. As a team, the Redhawks were shooting just 6-for-28 from the floor (21.4%) and only one three-pointer (1-8). 
 
Forwards Abby Stephens and Julia Sion hauled in three rebounds apiece as the Redhawks lost the rebounding battle in the first half, 21-15. 
 
In contrast, EIU shot 50-percent from the field (14-28) led by Charita Lewis and Emily Meidel with eight points each. The Panthers used the paint to their advantage, scoring 16 of their first half points in the area. 
 
Out of the break, EIU remained on fire from three as Charita Lewis made the first basket of the second half from three. 
 
Bowen, with her sixth point, got the Redhawks on the board at the 9:27 mark to cut the score to 38-17 Panthers. 
 
OVC Player of the Week Macy McGlone would finish an old fashioned three-point play to put EIU back up 21 under a minute expired in the third quarter. 
 
Bowen would drain another jump shot with 6:11 to go in the quarter for her 10th point of the contest, a team-high at that point.
 
The Redhawks and Panthers would trade baskets as the quarter ran past the midway point. EIU's Miah Monahan hit a jumper, Kiyley Flowers responded off the assist from Bowen, and Macy McGlone hit a jumper of her own for EIU. 
 
The Redhawks closed the half with three straight possesions with points. Alecia Doyle used a nice move to get around the defender to score off the window. A Julia Sion free throw, followed by another Doyle layup would make the score 56-34 Panthers with just over a minute to go. 

At the end of the third, SEMO trailed 58-34. 
 
Bowen scored her career-high 20th point of the contest with 3:19 left in the quarter. She stared the quarter with 12 points and scored the first basket of the fourth on her way to a career night. 
 
Jaliyah Green finished with six points in the contest, all six coming in the final quarter. She finished an old-fashioned three pointer and drained a three pointer for her final stat line. 
 
Green's three-pointer would be the final made basket of the contest as EIU held on for a 71-52 victory on Thursday night.

Southeast Missouri Women's Basketball will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 17, when they take on SIUE. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m., CT. in Edwardsville, Ill.
