Volleyball Completes Sweep of Tennessee State with 3-1 Victory Saturday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Volleyball (7-9, 4-1 OVC) completed the weekend sweep of Tennessee State (4-13, 0-4 OVC) on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 3-1 at Houck Field House.

Redshirt sophomore Ramiri Gardner led the Redhawks offense with a season-best 15 kills on 23 total attacks, with just 1 error, for a career-high .609 hitting-percentage in the match. Gardner was the only Redhawk in double figures with kills.

Lucy Arndt and Abby Johnson chipped in eight kills apiece as the Redhawks totaled 46 kills in the match on a .145 team hitting mark.

The Redhawks dominated in the first set with a .312 hitting-percentage, including 13 kills, and led by as many as seven with a 20-13 lead late in the set following a TSU service error.

SEMO closed the opening frame with a 5-1 run to seal it, 25-16, with kills from Marin Johnson and a block by Avery Torrey and Gardner. TSU hit just .056 in the opening frame after jumping out to a 5-1 lead to begin the match.

The second set was all Redhawks, picking up the 25-21 set two victory to take a 2-0 lead into the third set.

Tightly contested into the midway point of the set, SEMO built two separate three-point leads at 19-16 and 20-17 after a kill from Torrey and Arndt, respectively.

Following a timeout from TSU, an attack error from the Tigers' Maggie Keenan gave SEMO a 21-17 lead.

Following a kill from Kayla Closset and another TSU timeout, the Redhawks recorded a point with a TSU attack error and a kill from Abby Johnson to set up set point at 24-18.

Three-straight in a row from TSU got the visitor's closer, but a Lucy Arndt kill at 24-21 gave SEMO the two-set lead.

TSU would take the third set, 25-14, with an impressive. 500 hitting-percentage behind 16 kills as a team and trailed 2-1 following the third frame.

In the fourth set, SEMO dominated again as the Redhawks inversed the score to take the set, 25-14, and the match by a final score of 3-1.

Freshman setter Megan Holder recorded 25 assists on the afternoon as she now has double-digit assists in 15-of-16 games this season. Kennedey Johnson chipped in 15 more assists as the Redhawks opened Houck Field House with three-straight victories in 2024.
