Redhawks Host Tennessee State Friday & Saturday in OVC Play
Southeast Missouri Volleyball (5-9, 2-1 OVC) will return to Houck Field House on Friday & Saturday, Oct. 4 -5, to take on Tennessee State (4-11, 0-2 OVC) to round out the three-match homestand. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. 
 
Pink Up Friday
Friday's contest will feature the 'Pink Up' game as both the Redhawks and Tigers will wear pink in honor of breast cancer awareness month. SEMO will wear special edition warm-up shirts honoring a name of someone in their lives. TSU will wear pink jerseys on Friday night. 
 
Kids Day
Saturday's contest will feature a 'Kids Clinic' on the court following the completion of the match. Kids 18 and under receive free admission to the match while kids 14 and under are invited to stick around afterwards for special coaching and instruction from the SEMO Volleyball staff & players. 
 
Series History
The Redhawks and Tigers will meet for the 59th & 60th time over the weekend series as the Redhawks hold a 48-10 advantage in the all-time series. A season ago, SEMO travelled to Nashville, Tenn. and took both matches from the Tigers by final scores of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively. The last time TSU came to Cape Girardeau, the Redhawks downed TSU in both matches. 
 
Road Swing
Friday & Saturday's matches will conclude a three-match homestand for the Redhawks before they hit the road for three-straight contests beginning next Wednesday at Southeastern Conference member, Missouri (Oct. 9). SEMO will return to OVC play a week later when they head to Morehead, Ky. to take on Morehead State. 
 
Last Time Out
On Wednesday night, SEMO outlasted Little Rock in a four-set match victory in the home opener at Houck Field. The Redhawks won 3-1 by scores of 20-25, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19 behind 13 kills from Lucy Arndt. Ramiri Gardner, who finished with a season-high 11 kills, and Abby Johnson (10 Kills) powered SEMO past the Trojans with a .169 hitting-percentage. The win was the second conference victory of the season as the Redhawks sit at 2-1 in OVC play.
 
Non-Conference Recap
The Redhawks wrapped up the beginning of non-conference play with a 3-8 overall record including wins over Green Bay (3-1), Lehigh (3-0), and Austin Peay (3-1). SEMO battled in the final weekend of non-conference play with two heartbreaking, five-set losses to Missouri State and Southern Illinois, respectively. SEMO will play one final non-conference opponent next Wednesday when they take on Missouri (Oct. 9) in Columbia, Mo. 
 
Career-High Night
Redshirt sophomore Ramiri Gardner finished Wednesday night's match with a career-best 11 kills against Little Rock. Gardner, who had not played in a season since 2022, entered the match with a career-high of 10 kills coming two separate times this season. Gardner surpassed that mark with 11 kills on 18 total attacks with just one error, for a .556 hitting-percentage.
 
Schuberth Digs It
Libero Nina Schuberth recorded a career-high in digs last night after making her third consecutive start in the libero shirt against Little Rock. Schuberth, who now has a streak of four games with 20+ digs, recorded 32 digs against the Trojans and helped hold the visitors to a .127 hitting-percentage. 
 
Uno, Dos, Tres, ACE
The Redhawks have dialed it up from the service line this season after last night marked the seventh match in 2024 with seven or more aces. The Redhawks recorded exactly seven last night, led by Ramiri Gardner and Nina Schuberth with three each. SEMO recorded a season-best nine aces against Missouri State in Carbondale, Ill. (9/20). 
 
Arndt You Glad She's a Redhawk
Sophomore Lucy Arndt has become a jack-of-all-trades for the Redhawks in 2024. Arndt, the reigning OVC Freshman of the Year, has been all over the stat sheet offensively and defensively. She has 11 matches this season with double-digit kills, including a season-high 17 kills against Middle Tennessee (9/6). She is currently on a six-match streak of finishing with double-digit kills. Arndt has recorded seven matches with double-digit digs, including two matches with a season-best 16 digs (9/20 & 9/21). Between kills and digs, Arndt has six matches this season with a double-double. 
 
Scouting the Opponent
Tennessee State
The Tigers come into the weekend series with a 4-11 overall record and an 0-2 start to OVC play most recently dropping their conference opening matches to Morehead State (3-0) and Tennessee Tech (3-2) last Wednesday and Friday, respectively. 
 
TSU's offense is led by Jayla Holcombe who has 174 kills on the season. Celestial Miller is the only other Tiger north of 100 kills with 150. The offense runs through setters Janke Pretorius and Sagaia Reilly who have 294 and 207 assists, respectively. 
 
Defensively, TSU ranks near the top of the conference in blocks with 137 total blocks on the season led by Maygan Miller-Garcia (61.0) and Storm White (60.0). The Tigers rank second in the OVC in blocks, trailing only SIUE (143.0), and have seven more blocks on the season than the Redhawks (130.0). 
 
The backline is protected by Hadley Pride who has recorded 238 digs on the season. Miller (122) and Pretorius (122) chip in as well as TSU leads the conference in opponent hitting-percentage, holding their opponents to a .141 hitting-percentage on average.
