Redhawks Down Eastern Illinois in Straight Sets Thursday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Southeast Missouri Volleyball (10-10, 7-1 OVC) swept Eastern Illinois (6-14, 2-8 OVC) in three sets on Thursday night by final scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-19 to win their third match in a row.

For SEMO, the win over Eastern Illinois pushes their Ohio Valley Conference win streak to five games.

The Redhawks were led offensively by sophomore Lucy Arndt who finished with a .200 hitting-percentage with 11 kills on 35 total attempts (four errors). Marin Johnson, Abby Johnson and Ramiri Gardner chipped in eight kills each as SEMO recorded 41 total kills on the night.

For Arndt, her 11 kills and 13 digs totaled another double double for the sophomore bringing her total to eight on the season.

EIU and SEMO played to a 15-14 Redhawks advantage at the game's first media timeout. After EIU's Ireland Hieb recorded a kill out of the timeout, the Redhawks went on a quick 3-0 run with a kill from Arndt, an EIU error, and an Arndt ace.

The run forced EIU into a timeout as the Redhawks led 18-15. A final attack error on set point from EIU gave SEMO the 25-20 first set win.

A tightly contested second set, SEMO and EIU battled point for point before the Redhawks had their biggest lead of the set with a 13-10 lead. An EIU kill, followed by an Abby Johnson kill gave SEMO another three-point advantage (14-11).

Trailing 19-18 off an EIU ace, SEMO burned a timeout before scoring two-straight points to regain the lead via an Avery Torrey kill and a bad set from Heib.

Megan Holder dialed up an ace to spark a big run from the Redhawks as they closed the second set, 25-23.

The Redhawks dominated the third set, outhitting the Panthers by a .286 to .105 advantage in the final set to take it, 25-19.

OVC Co-Defensive Player of the Week Nina Schuberth finished with 24 digs as she controlled the backline all night for the Redhawks.

SEMO will be back in action for match two against Eastern Illinois tomorrow night at 5 p.m. from Houck Field House.
