Redhawks Host Little Rock in First Home Match of Season Wednesday
Southeast Missouri volleyball (4-9, 1-1 OVC) will play their first home match of the 2024 campaign on Wednesday, Oct. 2, when they host Little Rock (7-8, 2-0 OVC) to continue Ohio Valley Conference play. First serve is slated for 6 p.m., CT. at Houck Field House.Â

Series History
The Redhawks & Trojans will meet for just the fifth time on Wednesday night. Little Rock, who joined the OVC in 2022, will make just their third trip to Cape Girardeau where they are 0-2 overall. SEMO holds a 3-1 advantage over LR including a season-sweep in 2023. The Redhawks lone loss in the series came in a five-set loss at Little Rock in 2022. In four matches, SEMO has swept three-of-four from LR.Â

SEMO volleyball will return to Houck Field House for the first time in 2024 after starting the year with four straight non-conference tournaments on the road plus the first two matches of OVC play on the road last weekend. The Redhawks enjoyed the friendly confines of Houck a season ago, boasting a 9-3 overall home record.Â

SEMO volleyball opened Ohio Valley Conference play on the road last weekend against Southern Indiana splitting the series in Evansville. The Redhawks picked up their first win of the conference slate with a 3-1 victory on Friday night.Â

Lucy Arndt with 12. Abby and
Marin Johnson finished with 11 and 10, respectively, to power the Redhawks past USI.Â

Megan Holder dished out 30 assists as the Redhawks outhit USI by a .158 to .122 advantage over the four-set match.Â

Saturday's match did not go the Redhawks was as USI won 3-1 in the second-of-two matches to split the series. The Screaming Eagles hit an impressive .300 on the afternoon to just .252 from the Redhawks.Â

Defensive Player of the WeekÂ
Sophomore defensive specialist/libero
Nina Schuberth was crowned Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon.Â
Â
Schuberth, a sophomore from Yorkville, Ill., started at libero in both matches against Southern Indiana (Sept. 27-28) to begin conference play last weekend. She recorded 41 digs over the two matches for a 5.13 digs-per-set mark.Â
Â
She is the first Redhawk in 2024 to receive a weekly award from the league through the first 13 games of the season.Â

So far in 2024, Schuberth has appeared in 52 sets for the Redhawks. She has recorded 81 digs over 13 matches for 1.56 digs-per-set. She is currently on a three-match streak with 20+ digs, including a season-high 22 against Southern Illinois (9/21).Â

A season ago, Schuberth set the single-season program record for service aces in a season (49) and is currently sitting at 17 in 2024. She has recorded a season-high three aces two different times against Middle Tennessee (9/6) and Eastern Kentucky (9/14).

Three Redhawk attackers have eclipsed the 100 kills mark on the season thus far as outside hitters

Abby Johnson are responsible for 413-of-592 total kills on the season as a team.Â

Arndt leads the way with 150. The OVC Freshman of the Year and first team selection is averaging 2.88 kills-per-set and has a .107 hitting-percentage. She is also the only Redhawk to have started and played in all 13 matches through the beginning of the season.Â

Abby Johnson is the second highest with 146 and has the best hitting-percentage of the trio (.249). Johnson's 146 kills come on just 377 total attacks with only 52 errors.
Freshman
Marin Johnson follows just behind with 117 kills on 374 total attacks. She has registered just 50 errors on the season for a .179 hitting-percentage.Â

SEMO's defensive backline has gotten help from an outside hitter, a duo of liberos, and their setters, holding their opponents to just a .194 hitting-percentage.

Nina Schuberth, after starting the last two matches, is close behind with 81. Richman leads the club with 190 total digs, followed by Arndt (126), and Holder (110).Â

The Redhawks have been dominant at the net on the defensive side. Through the first 13 games, including two OVC games, SEMO ranks third in the conference in blocks with 121 total blocks. Over 52 sets, SEMO has 170 block assists, 36 solo blocks, and currently average 2.33 blocks-per-set.Â

Lester Denies
Freshman middle blocker
Alaina Lester is averaging a team-best 1.14 blocks-per-set ratio and is second in the OVC with 58 total blocks. She trails only Taya Nordmann of SIUE (71). Lester has registered at least one block in 11-of-13 games this season. She recorded a career-best 11 block assists in Friday's match against Southern Indiana (W, 3-1) and has eight matches of at least five or more blocks.Â

SEMO Volleyball has continued to start fast in matches. The Redhawks are outscoring their opponents in the opening frame by a 301-295 advantage.Â

Scouting the Opponent
Little Rock
The Trojans are led by Van Compton who is in her 44
th season in charge of Little Rock volleyball. LR comes into the Wednesday match with a 7-8 overall record and a 2-0 start to OVC play last weekend.Â

LR swept UT Martin by final scores of 3-0 and 3-1 on Friday and Saturday, respectively, and now sit atop the OVC standings after the first weekend.Â

The Trojans offense is led by Jeila Fullerton who has 191 kills on the season followed by Bella Cherrt (136), and Kaila Harris (130). The offense is ran by setter Dariana Valencia who leads LR with 303 total assists and is seventh in the league in that category. Kaylee Smith has dished out 261 to help LR hit .187 as a team this season.Â

LR and SEMO are "travel partners" deemed by the league and will host SEMO later this season in a midweek contest in Little Rock, Ark. (Oct. 29).Â
