Redhawks Drop New Year’s Day Contest to Austin Peay Saturday

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Deanay Watson registered a game-high 16 points and Roshala Scott added 12 as Southeast Missouri women's basketball (4-9, 0-2 OVC) fell to Austin Peay (8-4, 1-1 OVC), 72-62, on New Year's Day 2022 Saturday afternoon at the Show Me Center.
Shay-Lee Kirby led four Governors in double-digits scoring with 16 as Austin Peay shot 50 percent as a team. Lyric Cole, Yamia Johnson and Liz Gibbs each finished with 12.
The Governors held a slight 12-10 advantage after the first quarter before a 16-3 run in the second stanza.
SEMO jumped out to a 4-0 lead after buckets by Shymaryia Christopher and Kennedi Watkins.
Taelour Pruitt nailed a three-pointer to pull the Redhawks within one, 20-19, before a basket by Gibbs widened the lead to 30-19.
Austin Peay went to the locker room with a 31-25 edge at halftime.
The Governors then grew their margin to 36-25 after a three-pointer by Kirby and a field goal by Kasey Kidwell to start the third quarter.
Chandler Davis knocked down a triple to make the score 49-40 with just over two minutes left in the frame. Davis matched a personal best five points including her first career trey.
Kori Tomlin then cut the deficit to 53-43 with a trey as the horn sounded to conclude the third quarter.
Austin Peay took its largest lead of the day, 65-49, after a lay-up by Johnson with 4:11 remaining in regulation.
SEMO continued to fight and trimmed the deficit to 65-58 after a 9-0 run at the 2:30 mark. Scott and Tomlin hit consecutive three-pointers during the sequence.
Scott added a three-pointer to cut the edge to 68-62 with 31 ticks remaining.
Watson was 7-for-11 from the field shooting with six boards in 32 minutes of action. She led the Redhawks in both Ohio Valley Conference games this week.
Scott added a 4-for-9 clip including 3-for-7 from three-point distance.
Halle Smith finished Saturday with nine points and a career-high nine rebounds.
SEMO shot 41 percent from the field including 58 percent in the second quarter and 46 percent to conclude the game.
The Redhawks shot a season-high 42 percent (8-for-19) from three-point range and was .500 in both the second and third frames.
The Govs outscored SEMO in the paint, 36-26, and cashed in 21 points off turnovers.
Prior to Saturday, the Redhawks had won the last four meetings between the two institutions.
SEMO assistant coach David Midlick faced his former team Saturday. Midlick led the Austin Peay women's basketball team as the head coach and guided the Governors to six-consecutive OVC Tournament appearances from 2015 to 2021.
SEMO next heads to the Music City to face Belmont and Tennessee State, Jan. 6 and 8 in Nashville, Tennessee.
