CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri men's and women's cross country teams will return to competition tomorrow after a two week break at the Greater Louisville Classic.
The event will feature a total of 50 Division I universities competing, including 7 other OVC teams aside from Southeast. The meet, hosted by Louisville, will be held at P. Tom Sawyer State Park with the men running first with an 8K at 9:30 a.m. and the women starting their 5k race at 10:15 a.m.
Both the men's and women's team were seeded in the first race, which not every Division I team was picked for, so the competition level will be very high running along a lot of the top programs in the country.
"The big trick is you can't be conservative in these types of races," said head coach Ryan Lane. Indicating that that type of mindset won't work in this competitive of a meet.
This will be the first time this season SEMO's men's team will be at full strength, as many top runners missed at least one of the first two meets.
"I'm looking forward to being at full strength with the guys, we've had a really good last few weeks of training," Lane said. He also mentioned being excited to have back one of his top men runners in Griffin Bailey for the first time this year, as well as another good opportunity for the freshman boys to get more comfortable with an 8K race.
On the women's side, Kaitlyn Shea will be looking to place very highly after individually winning both the Walt Crawford Open and Forest Park Cross Country Festival to start off the season.
After the Louisville meet, the Redhawks will have a two-week break before they compete in the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria, Ill. on October 13.
