Redhawks Roll Past Owls, 94-58

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri women's basketball (7-6) team brought its non-conference schedule to a close Wednesday afternoon by scoring a season-high 94 points in the 94-58 win over William Woods University (8-3).
The Redhawks had five players with double-digit point performances, three of which came off the bench. Bri Mitchell nearly had a season-high, tallying 17 points in the game. Mitchell was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range, which was a career-best for the junior.
The last time Southeast scored 94 or more points was on Nov. 21, 2006. Southeast put up 101 points against Harris-Stowe in the Show Me Center. The last 90-point game came a year later when the Redhawks tallied 91 points at Central Arkansas on Nov. 17, 2007.
The first quarter remained close as the frame ended with the Redhawks narrowly on top, 17-14. The period scoring was capped by a good 3-pointer by Kaley Leyhue, her first of three in the game.
Southeast drained three 3-pointers in the first period, two by Mitchell and one from Leyhue.
After the ninth tie of the game at 26-26, the Redhawks sparked an impressive 27-3 run on the Owls to pull way out in front going into halftime, 53-29.
The Redhawks shot 65% (13-for-20) in the second period alone and added four more 3-pointers. Imani Johnson had 10 points just in the second period to lead the Redhawks.
Southeast's 36 second-period points were a season-high for points in a quarter. The Redhawks' 53 first-half points were also a season-best.
At half, Mitchell led the Redhawks with 11 points followed by Erin Bollmann and Johnson with 10 each.
Southeast continued to widen its lead on William Woods in the third quarter. An 8-0 run over three minutes widened the lead to the largest of the game so far at 31 points, 67-36, with 3:07 to play.
The period finished with Southeast out in front by 28 points, 71-43.
With about 5:30 to play in the game, Southeast found their largest lead of 39 points, 87-48.
Southeast rounded out the scoring with a good jumper by Dolapo Balogun, 94-58, with 49 seconds to play.
Johnson tallied 14 points and kept her perfect free-throw streak alive by going 4-for-4 from the line. She is now a perfect 27-for-27 on the season.
Leyhue, who came off the bench for the first time this season, put up a career-high 11 points and drained three 3-pointers, also a career-best for the sophomore.
Deja Jones and Bollmann each had 10 points in the contest. Jones' 10 points extended her double-digit point streak to four games. Jones also had eight rebounds in the game.
Connor King tied a season-high 11 rebounds Wednesday. It was only her second double-figure rebound game this season, 20th of her career.
Balogun not only recorded her first points as a Redhawk, she finished with seven in 12 minutes of play, the most she's played this season. She also pulled down three rebounds.
Another notable freshman performance came from Corneisha Henderson. Henderson had two points with four rebounds, five assists, and a pair of steals in 15 minutes of play.
As a team, Southeast shot 44.4% (36-of-81) from the field and 40.9% (9-of-22) from beyond the arc.
Every player saw decent playing time as the Redhawks used all 13 of their available players in Wednesday's contest.
Kennedy Volkart led the way for the Owls with 13 points followed closely by April Gebke with 11.
The Redhawks have a quick turnaround as they host Belmont University (8-4) in the Ohio Valley Conference opener Thursday, Dec. 31. The Redhawks and Bruins are set to tipoff at 2:30 p.m. following the men's basketball game.
This is the second-straight season Southeast will enter conference play above .500. The Redhawks were 7-6 at this point last season also.
