Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Redhawks Cruise to 109-66 Victory Over Oakland City

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Southeast Missouri women's basketball team began exhibition play Sunday afternoon with a 109-66 victory over Oakland City.

It was the first game in the newly renovated Show Me Center and the first game with new NCAA rules put in place including four 10-minute quarters and new foul rules.

It was a team effort as four players recorded double-digit points Sunday. The exhibition game also allowed all 14 Redhawks to see time on the floor.

"First, I would like to thank all of our fans for coming out; that was huge. It was great to see them here and cheering at the right times and making the arena loud. Overall, I am pleased with today's performance," said head coach Rekha Patterson

When asked about her first game as a head coach, Patterson had this to say: "It was really fun. It was good to see the team go out and execute on a lot of the things we've been working on and I am pleased with their performance."

Southeast began the game with a 32-10 first quarter. Tied at 6-6, the Redhawks went on a 9-1 run and never looked back from there. The Redhawks ended the quarter on a 15-point run to take a commanding lead on the Lady Oaks early in the game.

Deja Jones led the Redhawk offense in the quarter, tallying eight points and grabbed a team-best four boards.

The Redhawks added a game-high 33 points to the score in the second quarter to take a 65-22 lead on Oakland City. Jones buried a layup 32 seconds into the quarter to spark a 10-1 run to start the second and open a 30-point lead.

Up 46-17 in the second, Imani Johnson drained a three-pointer to start another long run by the Redhawks, this time a 12-point run to widen the gap by 41 points, 58-17.

The Redhawks carried a 65-22 lead going into halftime.

The Redhawks finished the first half shooting 53.2% from the field, 42.9% from beyond the arc, and 85.7% from the free throw line.

Jones finished with 16 points and six rebounds in the first half. Johnson also eclipsed 10 points in the half, recording 11 with a team-leading seven boards.

The third quarter began with Oakland City taking five of the first seven points. Down 79-35 at the 5:40 mark, the Lady Oaks went on a nine-point run to narrow the Redhawk lead to 35; however, that would be the closest they would get to the Redhawks the rest of the game.

The Redhawks ended the third quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 90-46 lead into the fourth and final frame.

Hackmann added 10 points in the third quarter, bringing her total to 18.

The fourth quarter was the only one in which the Lady Oaks outscored the Redhawks, 20-19. The quarter saw a balanced attacked from both teams with neither side able to gain much momentum.

Jones, Hackmann, and Johnson all finished the game with 18 points. Jones and Johnson each led the team with nine rebounds. Kaley Leyhue tallied 11 points Sunday. Bri Mitchell led the squad with six assists on the day. Mitchell also contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Erin Bollmann came off the bench in the second half and put up eight points and six boards.

Southeast finished shooting 46.2% (42-of-91) from the field and 77.8% (21-of-27) from the free throw line. The Redhawks made four of their 15 three-point shots.

The Redhawks were strong in the post Sunday as they put up a stifling 68 points in the paint. They scored 33 points off turnovers and 17 second chance points.

The Redhawks will play their second and final exhibition matchup on Wednesday against Lindenwood-Belleville at 6:30 p.m.
