Women’s Basketball Begins Exhibition Play Sunday
10/31/2015 11:30:00 AM | Women's Basketball
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Southeast Missouri women's basketball team will play the first of their two exhibition games Sunday. The Redhawks take on Oakland City at 2 p.m. in the newly renovated Show Me Center.
The Redhawks will play Lindenwood-Belleville on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
Redhawks fans can receive free admission to each exhibition game they bring three non-perishable food items to; collection barrels will be available at the box office windows at the main entrance of the Show Me Center. Free admission is available to all fans, with a minimum three-item donation per fan, regardless of age.
Sunday's exhibition will officially open the Rekha Patterson era at Southeast Missouri. Patterson was named the eighth head coach in Southeast Missouri women's basketball history on April 15. She most recently served as Associate Head Coach at Ball State.
The Redhawks were picked to finish 12th in the 12-team Ohio Valley Conference. Patterson says that a last-place pick will push her team to work harder and compete with passion in the gym.
"It is what it is but it's also a preseason poll," Patterson began. "Whenever there is a preseason poll, picks are being based on what happened last year. We are going to work every day, win or lose, to be our best. We are going to learn to win, we are going to fight, we are going to compete with great passion, we are going to restore pride in this program and if it means we finish last but gave it our best, then we live with that and we figure out how to be better next year. We do not need this poll to motivate us. We are already motivated and our goals are already set."
The 2015-16 team returns nine players from last season including four upperclassmen whom Patterson believes will lead the team on the floor and in the numbers in which the Redhawks will put up. Aside from three seniors and one junior, the roster features four sophomores who saw limited action a season ago and six freshmen.
Erin Bollmann, Connor King, and Olivia Hackmann make up the 2015-16 senior class. The seniors bring with them a plethora of collegiate experience and solid numbers from a season ago which will be key for this young Redhawks team.
Sunday's game will be the first Redhawks basketball game played in the newly renovated Show Me Center. It will be fans' first chance to see the Show Me Center in full game mode with the new video board, sound system, and lighting.
Regular priced admission for women's basketball games is $5 for all fans.
Both exhibition games will be broadcast live on SEMO ESPN 1220 AM.
