EUGENE, Ore. – One spot, less than two inches. That's what separated the Southeast Missouri track and field program from crowning its third All-American of the week.
Reggie Miller's stellar sophomore season concluded at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday. His evening ended in the high jump prelims, where he cleared his first two heights (6-8 3/4 and 6-10 3/4) with ease.
After those two jumps, Miller missed his three attempts at 7-0 1/2 and ended up tied for 17th. His finish is one spot shy of the cutoff for earning second-team All-America status.
“Reggie looked good on his first two jumps,” Southeast head coach Eric Crumpecker said. “He just barely missed his first attempt at 7-0 1/2. I'm really proud of all three of the kids here this weekend. None of them backed down. I'm looking forward to those three coming back next year, hopefully with more joining them.”
Miller had a terrific second collegiate season. After breaking the indoor school record in the high jump (7-0 1/4), Miller was named the Ohio Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Year during the indoor season. During the outdoor season, Miller won his second-straight high jump title at the OVC Outdoor Championships, clearing a career-best 7-1. He also won the triple jump at the conference meet, qualifying for the NCAA West Region prelims in that event as well.
The Redhawks' had a productive week in Eugene. Sophomore Kevin Farley broke his own school record in the shot put on Wednesday, earning first-team All-America honors with a seventh-place throw of 61-11 3/4. On Thursday, Blake Carter tied the outdoor long jump record, clearing 25-6 1/4 and placing 10th and second-team All-America status.
Southeast's three national qualifiers are its most since 2006. Farley and Carter became the men's fifth and sixth All-Americans since moving to Division I prior to the 1992 season. Farley's seventh-place finish netted Southeast two points in the NCAA team standings, the Redhawks' first points at nationals since 2008.
