CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri women's basketball got off to a strong start, but a season-low shooting performance ultimately sent the Redhawks to a 53-49 loss to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon.
The Redhawks shot a season-low 26.5 percent from the field and fell to 8-14 on the season, 2-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference, after their sixth-straight loss.
“This was a tough loss,” Southeast head coach Ty Margenthaler said. “I told the team that our effort was tremendous and our detail on the scouting report was right on. It was a physical game and we made them take tough shots. The second half came down to getting into a little foul trouble with our posts. Eastern Kentucky is a good basketball team, there's a reason they're 13-7.”
After four quick EKU (13-7, 7-2 OVC) points, Bailie Roberts got Southeast on the board with a three-pointer two and a half minutes into the game. The Redhawks missed seven of their first eight shots and fell into an early 8-3 hole before Patricia Mack and Roberts hit back-to-back jumpers to bring them within a point. Roberts connected on another jumper after grabbing an offensive rebound to give Southeast its first lead (9-8) with 13:53 left in the first.
LaRa'e Allen's jumper put EKU on top 10-9 with under 12 minutes left in the frame, but Southeast countered with a 9-0 run to go on top 18-10. Jordan Hunter hit a jumper and Brittany Harriel followed with two free throws and a three. A few minutes later, Roberts canned a transition jumper to put the Redhawks up by eight points.
Alex Jones made two free throws to account for the Lady Colonel's first points in six and a half minutes to pull them within 18-12 with over five minutes left in the first. EKU extended the mini run to 6-0, pulling within two points on a Jade Barber layup.
On the next Southeast possession, Mack corralled an offensive rebound and rattled in a jumper to give the Redhawks a 20-16 lead with a minute to play in the half. After getting a stop, Roberts banked in a jumper at the buzzer to stake the Redhawks to a 22-16 halftime lead.
Brittany Coles made Eastern Kentucky's first three of the game to cap a 7-2 spurt and pull the Lady Colonels within 24-23 with 17:07 left in regulation. Undaunted, Hunter and Harriel drained back-to-back threes to increase the lead to seven. After EKU split a pair of free throws, Mack's jumper was pure and put the Redhawks up 32-24 with 15:48 on the clock.
Marie Carpenter hit a three for the first points by either team in nearly four minutes, those were also the first points for Carpenter (who was averaging 10.9 per game) of the day to that point. Alex Jones sunk four-straight free throws to extend the run and pull within 32-31 with 10:19 showing on the clock. After getting another stop, Carpenter drained a three from the corner to make it a 10-0 EKU run and give it a 34-32 lead with 9:45 left.
Roberts made two of three free throws to tie the score on the next possession. The teams traded points on the next two trips, but Carpenter hit a mid-range jumper to put the Colonels up 40-38 with eight minutes left.
After getting a stop, Hunter found Allyson Bradshaw behind the defense for an and-one. Her layup and free throw put the Redhawks up 41-40 with just over five minutes left to play.
Miranda Maples put the Lady Colonels back in front with a three pointer, though Hunter sunk two free throws to tie the game at 43 apiece with 3:21 remaining. From there, EKU scored six unanswered points on a Brittany Coles layup, two Carpenter free throws and a Coles put back to make it 49-43 with 52 seconds left.
The Redhawks kept battling and managed to cut the gap down to 52-49 with 16 seconds left, though after Carpenter missed her first free throw, she made the second to salt away the game.
Southeast shot a season-low 26.5 percent from the field and made 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from three-point range. EKU finished at 32.1 percent from the floor and 4-of-16 (25 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Colonels made 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) at the charity stripe against the Redhawks' 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) figure.
EKU enjoyed a 48-40 advantage in rebounding, including a 26-16 margin in the second half. Southeast committed a season-low eight turnovers while forcing 15 EKU miscues.
“This was one of the most physical games I've witnessed in the OVC,” Margenthaler said. “Our guards did a nice job taking care of the ball. We took good shots, but the proverbial lid was on the basket tonight and they just weren't falling.”
Harriel led all players with 16 points while Roberts (13) and Hunter (11) both cracked double-digit points. Mack finished with 10 rebounds, all in the first half, to lead Southeast.
EKU's Carpenter scored 15 points, all in the final 12 minutes, to lead the team. Jones finished with a 13-point, 11 rebound double-double and Coles scored 12. Jade Barber led all players with 14 rebounds.
The Redhawks travel to Austin Peay on Monday. That game tips off at 7 p.m.
