EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. –
A 15-0 second-half run by SIU Edwardsville sent the Southeast Missouri women's basketball team to a 78-65 loss at the Vadalabene Center on Monday night.

The Redhawks fall to 8-13 on the season and 2-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference after their fifth-straight loss.

After two scoreless minutes, SIUE (11-10, 5-4 OVC) tallied the game's first six points after Coco Moore made a field goal and a layup with a Jasmin Hill score mixed in between.

Southeast responded with seven-straight points as Brittany Harriel converted a layup and long two-point jumper to get the Redhawks within two points. Kara Wright then grabbed a rebound and went coast-to-coast for a layup and-one. Her free throw gave Southeast a 7-6 lead with 12:26 to play in the opening stanza.

Tierny Austin made a jumper on the next Cougars' possession to put them in front 8-7. After Raven Berry's free throws upped the SIUE lead to three, Bailie Roberts hit a jumper to bring Southeast within a point. The Cougar lead eventually reached 14-11 before Dru Haertling was pure on a three-pointer, tying it up at 14-14 with 6:57 left in the half.

Baskets by Michaela Herrod and Raven Warford put SIUE back in front by four points, but Allyson Bradshaw made back-to-back three-pointers around two Berry free throws that evened the score at 20-20 with two and a half minutes left. Berry made a basket to put the Cougars back in front, but Harriel hit a long jumper to tie the contest up for the fourth time in the half.

A put back by Warford gave SIUE another lead with 1:15 left, but Harriel countered with a three-pointer to make it 25-24 with just a minute remaining in the stanza. A Michaela Herrod hoop closed the first-half scoring and gave the Cougars a 26-25 lead at halftime.

Wright opened the second half with a layup that put Southeast in front 27-26, but Raven Berry scored SIUE's first seven points of the half to put the Cougars back up 33-29. After a Wright free throw pulled the Redhawks within three, Jasmin Hill hit the Cougars' first three of the game to make it a 36-30 ballgame. Wright made another free throw and then got a layup in transition to make it a one-score game and Bradshaw's three evened the score at 36 apiece with under 16 minutes to play. A deft drive to the basket by Wright resulted in a layup to extend the Southeast run to 8-0 and make it 38-36.

Berry got a three-point play with a layup and free throw on the ensuing SIUE possession, but Patricia Mack calmly hit a baseline jumper immediately after to put Southeast back ahead 40-39 with 14 and a half left.

After a stop, Wright made a difficult jumper in traffic to give the Redhawks their largest lead of the game at 42-39. The Cougars came back to grab a 51-48 lead, but Bradshaw drilled another three to tie it up at 51 apiece.

The teams traded scores as Valerie Finnin sunk two free throws and Bailie Roberts connected on a 15-footer to tie the score up for the 11th time (53-53).

SIUE followed with a 15-0 run that gave it a 68-53 lead with under four minutes to go. Southeast never got any closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

“I commend our players for the effort, which was outstanding,” Southeast head coach Ty Margenthaler said. “They gave themselves a chance to win, tied with nine minutes left, but they went on a 15-0 run and we beat ourselves. It's unfortunate we turn the ball over at crucial times and we aren't rebounding well enough lately.”

SIUE made 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) second half field goals and finished at 43.9 percent overall. Southeast made 40.6 percent of its shots, including an 8-of-26 (30.8 percent) mark from three-point range. The Cougars made 2-of-7 three-pointers, but had a decisive 44-29 edge in rebounding and outscored the Redhawks 42-20 in the paint. SIUE also got to the line 32 times, making 26 free throws (81.3 percent) while Southeast made 5-of-7 (71.4 percent), which were all taken by Wright. Southeast committed only 11 turnovers and forced 14 SIUE miscues.

Wright finished with a career-high 22 points, tying the highest scoring output for any Southeast player this season. Bradshaw also finished in double figures with 17 points and tied a career-high with five three-pointers. Patricia Mack led the Redhawks with 10 rebounds.

Berry posted a double-double with a game-high 28 points and 13 rebounds for SIUE. Coco Moore (17 points) and Tierny Austin (10 points) also reached double figures for the Cougars.

Southeast returns to the court on Saturday when it hosts Eastern Kentucky at the Show Me Center. That game tips off at 7 p.m.
