About Tennessee State – The Lady Tigers have dropped three of their last four games, which includes a 1-2 start to conference play. TSU has been close in its two OVC setbacks, falling by nine points to OVC West Division leader Eastern Illinois and dropping an 80-77 decision at OVC East Division leader Tennessee Tech. Five TSU players are averaging at least seven points per game, led by Jasmin Shuler's 10.1 points per game. She is averaging 16.5 points in her last two games. As a team, the Lady Tigers are 10th in the league in scoring offense (58.3 points per game). Defensively, TSU is eighth in the OVC in scoring defense (65.4 points per game) and has allowed 60 or more points in nine-straight games.
Last Meeting – Southeast's defense dominated TSU at the Show Me Center. The Redhawks allowed a season-low 39 points and held the Tigers to 22.4 percent shooting for the game, including a 5-of-25 figure in the second half.
Bianca Beck tied for the game high with 12 points while
Brittany Harriel scored eight and added 15 rebounds. Southeast's lead grew as large as 15 points. TSU took an early 15-11 lead, but did not lead for the final 28 minutes of the contest.
With a win, Southeast would…
•Win four-straight games for the first time since a 12-game winning streak from Jan. 12-Feb. 23, 2008.
•Be above .500 in January for the first time since Jan. 31, 2009 (10-9).
•Surpass last season's road win total.
•Win at Tennessee State for the first time since Jan. 17, 2008 (lost last three at TSU).
•Be 3-1 in conference play for the first time since the 2007-08 season.
On a Roll – Southeast defeated Austin Peay, Murray State and Saint Louis to start the 2013 calendar year, closing the book on a dubious trend over the past few seasons. Those victories were the first consecutive wins by the Redhawks since they defeated Tennessee State and Western Michigan on Dec. 4-7, 2010. Southeast is riding its first three-game winning streak since Jan. 29-Feb. 4, 2009.
Defense Getting Nasty – The Redhawks' defense has been a catalyst in their current three-game winning streak. Southeast allowed an average of 55.7 points in its wins over Austin Peay, Murray State and Saint Louis. Those three teams shot a collective 32.4 percent from the field and Southeast held MSU to 27.7 percent shooting in its Jan. 7 win. The Redhawks have held three opponents under 30 percent shooting this season and are second in the OVC in field goal percentage defense (36.5 percent) and third in scoring defense (60.8 points per game).
Streaky Roberts – Senior
Bailie Roberts has been Southeast's most consistent source of offense in her four seasons with the Redhawks. The Maryville, Tenn., native has scored in double figures 44 times in her career, the most among all active Southeast players. She has scored 831 career points, which is also the most among active players. However, Roberts' scoring has been streakier this season. She has scored 10 or more points in nine games this season, opening the year with two such performances, but posting only two in the eight games following. She has caught fire lately, scoring 10+ points in the last five games, including a career-high 22 points in a win over Murray State on Jan. 7. Roberts is averaging 14.4 points per game in that stretch.
Welcome Back – Southeast got a huge lift from senior forward
Brittany Harriel in its win over Austin Peay on Jan. 5. Harriel, who missed seven games and played 10 scoreless minutes in her return at Belmont, scored a season-high 19 points off the bench to help the Redhawks post a victory over the Lady Govs. Harriel made 8-of-13 shots, including a three-pointer for her first game with double-digit points since tallying 13 at Arkansas State on Nov. 19. The senior scored in double figures in Southeast's first four games prior to her injury and she led the team in scoring (10.2 points per game) and rebounding (6.9 per game) last season. Excluding the game Harriel was injured in the first half at Houston, the Redhawks average 63.8 points per game when the senior gets on the floor. During the stretch where she was injured, Southeast averaged 53.9 points from the point she got injured against Houston and missed seven games.
Some More Wins – Southeast moved to .500 (8-8) on the strength of a three-game winning streak, a remarkable improvement from recent seasons. Southeast has already surpassed last season's win total, when it went 7-22 in head coach
Ty Margenthaler's first season. With its Jan. 9 win over Saint Louis, Southeast picked up eight victories far earlier than it did in the previous three years, when the program went a combined 22-64. The Redhawks are off to their best 16-game start since starting 10-6 in the 2007-08 year, when they went 23-9 and won the regular season conference title with a 17-3 OVC record.
16-Game Records Since 2008-09
2008-09: 7-9
2009-10: 6-10
2010-11: 5-11
2011-12: 3-12
2012-13: 8-8
Cleaning the Glass – Junior forward
Patricia Mack has been a force on the glass this season. Through 16 games, Mack is third in the OVC in rebounding at 9.8 per game. She has grabbed 10+ boards 10 times this season, the first being a career-high 17-point, 10-rebound double-double at Arkansas State on Nov. 19. After two games with single-digit rebounds, Mack grabbed 10 or more rebounds in seven-straight games. She corralled 12 at Missouri on Nov. 29, pulled in a career-high 17 rebounds against UIC on Dec. 1, grabbed 11 more at Southern Illinois on Dec. 5, recorded 16 against Western Illinois on Dec. 8, finished with 10 at Western Kentucky on Dec. 16, posted a 12-point 10-rebound double-double against Missouri State on Dec. 21 and closed the calendar year with 11 rebounds at Belmont on Dec. 31. That streak ended due to foul trouble against Austin Peay, but Mack is the first Redhawk to grab 10+ rebounds in seven straight games since Lachelle Lyles did it in 13-straight contests on two separate occasions during the 2006-07 season. Mack got back to work with 12 boards against Murray State on Jan. 7 and corralled 15 in a win over Saint Louis on Jan. 9.
