NORMAL, Ill. –
Two Southeast Missouri gymnasts captured individual titles, but a slow start in the first rotation proved too much for the Redhawks (0-2, 0-1 Midwest Independent) to overcome in a 192.200-186.775 dual loss to MIC foe Illinois State on Saturday night.

With a shorthanded bars lineup that had only five competitors, the Redhawks got off on the wrong foot in the first rotation. Taylor Westrick's 9.425 was Southeast's top score as three of its five competitors fell in their routines. The Redhawks finished with a 44.675 while ISU scored 48.375 on vault to open up a lead of nearly four points after one rotation.

“This wasn't the performance that we expected tonight.” Southeast head coach Kristi Ewasko said. “However, we have an opportunity ahead of us with two weeks of practice to get ready for our next meet. We look forward to improving with all the training time ahead of us.”

Southeast did gain some ground on vault, tallying a 48.200. The Redhawks did not count a score below 9.500 and their final two competitors, Emma Garrett and Megan Fosnow, finished with a flurry with scores of 9.750 and 9.800, respectively. Fosnow's score tied her for the event title with ISU's Elise Gray while Garrett placed third with her strong performance. The Red Birds scored 48.025 on bars as a group.

Garrett continued her strong start to the season with a 9.750 on the floor exercise, giving the junior the individual title in that event for the second consecutive meet. Southeast scored 47.625 as a team on the event and ISU scored 47.550 on beam in the third rotation.

The Redhawks struggled on beam to close out the meet, tallying a 46.275. Angela Serafini was Southeast's top individual in the event with a 9.575, a score that placed the junior third in the competition. Illinois State finished with a 48.250 on the floor exercise.

Serafini competed in the all-around for the second consecutive meet and took second with a 37.975.

Southeast is off until Feb. 4, when it travels to Michigan State.
