Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker at Evansville

Brittney Kalinoski, Emily Coon, Samantha Lowman, Karlee Lursen and Kelsey Keeve have career nights for Redhawks
The Southeast Missouri volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker against Evansville in the opening match of the Dunn Hospitality Invitational in Evansville, Ind. Friday evening.
The scores of the match were 15-25, 25-13, 18-25, 26-24 and 12-15.
“We fought back and played with heart and determination and just really went after it today, but fortunately we fell short, Evansville is a very good team,” said head coach Julie Folliard
The Purple Aces took the first set 25-15. Evansville took control of the match after the two teams were tied at 6-6, as the Purple Aces used a five-point run and never looked back.
Brittney Kalinoski, a junior from Overland Park, Kan. got off to a fast start in the first set for the Redhawks hammering six kills in the opening frame.
The Redhawks took the second set decisively 25-13. The second frame featured the Redhawks hitting a respectable .275, but the Southeast held the Purple Aces to a hitting percentage of -.042, forcing nine errors.
The Purple Aces took the third set 25-18. Evansville hit a red hot .357 in the set with 17 kills and only two attack errors.
The Redhawks took the fourth frame 26-24 in thrilling fashion. The Redhawks were down 24-21 late in the set and battled their way back and took the frame 26-24.
The fourth set saw Southeast once again force nine errors by the Purple Aces.
In the fifth frame, the Redhawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Redhawks could not hold on falling 15-12 and dropping the match 3-2.
Kalinoski finished with a career-high 17 kills. Sophomore Emily Coon had a career night as well adding 15 kills. Coon also added seven blocks on the night.
Freshman Kelsey Keeve also added a career-high 12 kills.
“Keeve had an outstanding game and earned her place on the court for us,” said Folliard.
Junior Samantha Lowman paced the defense with a career-high 24 digs for Southeast. Fellow junior Karlee Lursen tied a career-high with 20 digs, she also added 13 kills.
Southeast had a season-high 63 kills on the night. The Redhawks also added a season-high 94 digs and five solo blocks and 16 blocking assists.
The Redhawks will be in action again tomorrow afternoon at noon against Pac-12 opponent Arizona. The match against the Wildcats marks the first time since 1998 that Southeast has played an opponent from the Pac-12.
