CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Southeast Missouri defeated SIUE 3-0 on Friday, taking the sets 25-17, 25-14, 26-24. The Redhawks hit .371 with 46 kills, while holding the Cougars to a .115 hitting percentage.
SEMO created early separation in the first set, moving in front 11-3 after Ellie Burns served consecutive aces following kills by Reagan Nelson and Lucy Arndt and a Marin Johnson block. The Cougars later scored five straight to cut SEMO's advantage to 22-16, but Nelson and Johnson added kills to help stop the push. Southeast Missouri took the set 25-17.
The Redhawks broke open the second set with a 10-0 surge from an 11-10 lead to 21-10, with Nelson serving nine straight points and recording two aces in that stretch. Earlier, SEMO moved from a 5-3 deficit to an 8-6 lead behind consecutive Arndt kills and Cougars errors. SEMO finished the set at 25-14 on Burns' kill.
After falling behind 7-6, Southeast Missouri answered with nine straight points, including eight consecutive service points from Burns, to move in front 15-7. The Cougars later tied the set at 24-24, but Nelson put down back-to-back kills to close out a 26-24 third-set win for the Redhawks.
