Soccer Hits the Road for Final Non-Conference Game

The Southeast Missouri (0-8-0) soccer team will hit the road for a pair of games. The squad will travel to Xavier (4-2-1) to wrap up non-conference matches Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The second game will be the Ohio Valley Conference opener when the Redhawks travel to Lindenwood Sunday at 1 p.m.

Series History

Xavier

This will be the first matchup between the Muskateers and the Redhawks. 

Lindenwood

The Redhawks currently hold a 2-1-3 record against the Lions, with the only loss coming last season in a 4-0 game in Houck Field. The series history dates back until 2013, before Lindenwood made the jump to D1and SEMO won 2-0 in 2023. 

Last week

The Redhawks went 0-2 losing on the road to Murray State and losing a close 4-3 battle against Kansas City. 

In the Murray State game, SEMO was able to get three shots on goal one from Skyler Kraft, Justi Nelson and Rachel Kretzer. 

Against Kansas City, the Redhawks took an early lead in the 13th minute when Maya Domian scored on a header off of an assist from Nelson. After three goals from the Roos, Alyssa Schulte scored her first career goal, putting a cross from Hayley Hogenmiller, in the back of the net. One minute later Nelson tabbed fer fourth point of the game scoring off a turnover to tie the game at 3. The Roos would score on a penalty kick in the 81st minute to wrap up the scoring.

Getting Healthy

The Redhawks returned five athletes back from injury this past week. Carson Bohnenstiehl, Maya Domian, Laia Amat along with both goalkeepers Holly Rimmer and Madison Geisler all saw action. Bohnenstiehl made her first appearance of the season playing 35 minutes at Murray State and 85 minutes while also starting against Kansas City. Rimmer also saw her first minutes of the season making four saves on five shots in 21 minutes. 

Amat, Domian and Geisler have already logged minutes this season and their return seemed to jumpstart the squad. Geisler made six saves against Kansas City and now ranks fourth in saves and first in saves per game among OVC goalies. Domian scored her first career goal as well. 

Nelson Leading the Charge

Out of the six goals SEMO has scored Justi Nelson has logged a goal or an assist on five goals. Nelson leads the team with three goals and added two assists. Her three goals tied for fifth most in the OVC and she is also in a tie for fourth with assists.  

Scouting Xavier

Xavier is 4-2-1 and in the week 3 United Soccer Coaches poll was ranked 24th. They have wins over #17 Michigan State, Murray State and Cincinnati. As a team the Muskateers are scoring 2.86 goals per game on 19 shots on average while limiting teams to 1.29 goals on 7.6 shots per game. Leading the scoring is Elin Hansson with seven goals and no assists. Samantha Erbach is leading the team with five assists while also adding three goals.  

Scouting Lindenwood

The OVC champions last season are back and have a record of 3-2-3 and have wins over Evansville, Murray State and Illinois State. As a team, the Lions are averaging .88 goals on 12.3 shots per game while holding opponents to .75 goals on 13.3 shots. Tasneem Dizdarevic is leading the team with two goals. And added an assist. Their strength comes from their goaltender Caroline Ritter, who has four shutouts in eight games carrying a .889 save percentage.

OVC Conference Outlook

The game on Sunday against Lindenwood will mark the opening game of the OVC slate for the Redhawks. SEMO will host Little Rock (Sept. 25th), UT Martin (Oct. 5th), Eastern Illinois (Oct. 12th) and Tennessee Tech (Oct. 19) for senior day. The OVC tournament will start on October 30th.
