MACOMB, Ill. — Southeast Mo. St. (2-11-1, 2-2-1) shut out Western Ill. (1-14-0, 0-5-0) in a decisive 5-0 victory at John MacKenzie Alumni Field, with Southeast Mo. St. scoring three goals in the first half.
Southeast Missouri State (2-11-1, 2-2-1 OVC) established early control over Western Illinois (1-14-0, 0-5-0), converting three goals in the first half to lead 3-0 at the break.
Hayley Hogenmiller opened the scoring with a goal in the 29th minute following a corner kick and added a second in the 42nd minute.
Riley Henderson extended the lead with a goal in the 44th minute, capitalizing on a series of well-timed corner kicks and effective offensive positioning. Despite Western Illinois' attempts, goalkeeper
Madison Geisler recorded multiple saves, maintaining a clean sheet through the period.
Southeast Missouri State extended their lead early in the second half when
Melissa Kubin found the back of the net just one second after play resumed. Later, in the 67th minute,
Navi Washington, assisted by
Carson Bohnenstiehl, added another goal to secure a 5-0 advantage. Western Illinois struggled with offside calls, recording three in the half and managed only two shots, both failing to score. The period ended with Southeast Missouri State leading 5-0.
Madison Geisler recorded a shutout with four saves. Washington scored one goal on her only shot attempt.
Zerina Markovic led the team with four shots, including one on goal. Hogenmiller contributed two goals, one of which was the game-winner.
The next challenge for Southeast Missouri State soccer is a home matchup against Eastern Illinois. The game is set for October 12 at 1 p.m. at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
