Welker’s Second Goal of the Season Propels Redhawks Past Bruins, 1-0, Tuesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lauren Welker netted her second goal in as many games to boost Southeast Missouri women's soccer (2-0-0, 2-0-0 OVC) past 2019 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Champion Belmont (1-2-0, 1-2-0 OVC), 1-0, Tuesday evening at E.S. Rose Park.
Knotted at 0-0 at the break, SEMO came on strong in the second half. Hannah Compernolle and Abby Tremain each registered shots on goal but Sarah Doyle was there for the Bruins to make a pair of stops in the 49th minute of play.
Less than two minutes later, Avery Nowak hit the right post to keep the score level at 0-0.
Lexi Grote then drew a penalty in the Bruins box to setup Welker's game winning goal at the 52:00 mark.
Sarah Doyle stopped Morgan McCourt's penalty kick but Welker was there to clean up the rebound and post her second career goal as a Redhawk.
Welker, a junior midfielder from Jackson, Missouri, has now scored goals in each of the two games this season.
A desperation shot on goal from Anna Sweeney soared over the net in the final minute of regulation.
Goalkeeper Bailey Redden picked up her second-straight win of the 2020-21 campaign, playing in all 90 minutes in the shutout.
Doyle was assessed the loss, allowing one goal while making four saves.
SEMO outshot the Bruins, 6-4, with five on goal. After 45 minutes of play, shots were tied at 1-1 in the Music City.
Tremain led all players Tuesday with two shots and one on net. She played in 56 minutes off the bench.
Compernolle, Nadiia Ivanchenko and Morgan McCourt each tallied a shot in the win.
Emma Brune, Hacker and Natalie Jackson all played in the full 90 minutes for the second-straight game.
Freshman Kiana Khedoo made her first career start as a Redhawk.
Gabby Gscheidmeier, a redshirt freshman from Germantown, Wisconsin, made her SEMO debut in the contest.
Belmont had seven corner kicks compared to SEMO's two.
The Redhawks next return to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on Friday to continue their campaign against Austin Peay. First kick with the Governors is set for 6 p.m., CT at Houck Field.
